How to Use

Dosage

Your surgeon will decide the exact amount of Tisseel you need during the procedure.

Method

Tisseel is applied by a surgeon directly to the wound surface after it has been dried. It is applied in a very thin layer using a special device.

Important

The surgeon will decide the appropriate total amount during your surgery; there is no fixed maximum daily dose for you to worry about as it is applied by a professional.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Wound infection after surgery
  • Numbness or tingling sensation
  • Rash or red spots on skin
  • Pain in arms or legs
  • General pain
  • Fever
  • Blood clot in the armpit vein
  • Fluid build-up under the skin (seroma)
RARE
  • Severe allergic reactions, such as hives, severe skin rash, itching, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat, difficulty breathing, feeling unwell, chills, chest tightness, low blood pressure, fast or slow heart rate, or fainting.
  • Reduced sense of touch
  • Slow heartbeat
  • Fast heartbeat
  • Low blood pressure
  • Bleeding or bruising
  • Blood clot
  • Air or gas bubble in bloodstream, which can be life-threatening.
  • Blockage in a brain artery or stroke
  • Shortness of breath or tightening of airways (bronchospasm)
  • Wheezing
  • Nausea
  • Blocked intestine
  • Red skin rash (erythema)
  • Poor wound healing
  • Swelling under the skin, especially face, lips, tongue
  • Pain from the procedure
  • Headache
  • Drowsiness
  • Restlessness
  • Burning or stinging at the application site
  • Increased breakdown products of blood clots (D-dimer levels)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to any of the ingredients in this medicine.
  • This medicine should not be applied directly into blood vessels (veins or arteries).
  • Tisseel is not meant to treat very heavy, gushing bleeding from arteries or veins by itself.
  • Tisseel does not replace stitches for closing surgical wounds.
  • Allergic reactions are possible, especially if you have been treated with Tisseel or aprotinin before. Tell your doctor about past reactions.

  • Accidental application into a blood vessel can cause life-threatening clots or severe allergic reactions. Doctors must be careful, especially during heart surgery, and avoid applying it to nasal membranes.
  • There is a very rare risk of air or gas bubbles entering the bloodstream (air/gas embolism) if the glue is sprayed with too much pressure or too close to the tissue.
  • Since Tisseel is made from human blood plasma, there is a very small risk of transmitting infections, even though strict safety measures are taken.
