How to Use

Dosage

The usual dose is 1000 mg to 3000 mg daily, taken in two equal doses. Your doctor will start you on a lower dose for two weeks before reaching the usual dose.

Method

Take Tilamir tablets by mouth twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening, at about the same time each day. Swallow them whole with a glass of water, with or without food.

Important

Do not take more than 3000 mg per day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Inflammation of the nose and throat
  • Drowsiness, sleepiness
  • Headache
  • Loss of appetite
  • Depression, hostility or aggression, anxiety, insomnia, nervousness or irritability
  • Seizures, balance problems, dizziness (feeling unsteady), lethargy (lack of energy), tremor (involuntary shaking)
  • Spinning sensation (vertigo)
  • Cough
  • Abdominal pain, diarrhea, indigestion, vomiting, nausea
  • Rash
  • Weakness, fatigue
RARE
  • Infection
  • Decrease in all types of blood cells
  • Severe allergic reactions (DRESS syndrome, anaphylactic reaction, angioedema with swelling of face, lips, tongue and throat)
  • Decreased blood sodium levels
  • Suicide, personality disorders (behavioral problems), abnormal thinking (slow thinking, difficulty concentrating)
  • Delirium
  • Encephalopathy (a brain disorder that can cause severe mental changes)
  • Seizures worsening or occurring more frequently
  • Uncontrolled muscle spasms affecting head, torso and limbs, involuntary movements, hyperactivity
  • Changes in heart rhythm (visible on electrocardiogram)
  • Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas)
  • Liver failure, hepatitis
  • Acute kidney injury
  • Severe skin rashes like erythema multiforme (blisters, target-like lesions), Stevens-Johnson syndrome (widespread blistering and peeling skin around mouth, nose, eyes, genitals), or toxic epidermal necrolysis (severe peeling over large body area)
  • Rhabdomyolysis (muscle tissue breakdown) with increased blood creatine phosphokinase levels, more common in Japanese patients
  • Limping or difficulty walking

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to levetiracetam or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • If you have kidney problems, your doctor may need to adjust your dose.
  • A small number of people taking epilepsy medicines, including Tilamir, have had thoughts of harming themselves or suicide. If you feel depressed or have suicidal thoughts, contact your doctor right away.
  • Tell your doctor if you or your family has a history of irregular heartbeat, or if you have a condition that causes heart rhythm problems or electrolyte imbalances.
  • Seizures may get worse or happen more often, especially in the first month of treatment or after a dose increase. Contact your doctor immediately if this happens.

  • If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, talk to your doctor. Do not stop taking this medicine without talking to your doctor. Breastfeeding is not recommended.
  • This medicine can make you sleepy. Do not drive or use machines until you know how it affects you. This is more likely at the start of treatment or when the dose is increased.
  • Seek immediate medical help if you experience severe allergic reactions (weakness, dizziness, difficulty breathing, swelling of face/lips/tongue/throat).
  • Seek immediate medical help if you develop flu-like symptoms with a spreading rash, high fever, or enlarged lymph nodes (DRESS syndrome).
  • Seek immediate medical help if you have symptoms of sudden kidney problems, like small urine volume, tiredness, nausea, vomiting, confusion, and swelling in legs/ankles/feet.
  • Seek immediate medical help if you develop severe skin rashes, such as blisters and target-like lesions (erythema multiforme), widespread blistering and peeling skin around the mouth, nose, eyes, genitals (Stevens-Johnson syndrome), or severe peeling over a large body area (toxic epidermal necrolysis).
  • Seek immediate medical help if you experience severe mental changes like confusion, drowsiness, memory loss, abnormal behavior, or other nervous system signs (encephalopathy).
