How to Use

Dosage

For adults, the first dose is 100 mg, then 50 mg every 12 hours. For children 8–12 years old, the dose is 1.2 mg per kg every 12 hours (up to a maximum of 50 mg). For children over 12, the dose is 50 mg every 12 hours.

Method

Given directly into a vein (into your bloodstream) as an infusion over 30–60 minutes.

Important

The maximum daily dose for regular use is 100 mg (two 50 mg doses 12 hours apart).

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea
  • Abscesses, infections
  • Dizziness
  • Headache
  • Injection site reactions (e.g., pain, redness, swelling, inflammation, or blockage in the vein)
  • Stomach pain, indigestion, loss of appetite
  • Itching, skin rash
  • Poor or slow wound healing
  • Changes in blood tests (e.g., reduced clotting, increased liver enzymes, high bilirubin, increased amylase or urea nitrogen, low blood sugar, low protein levels)
  • Pneumonia
  • Blood poisoning (sepsis)
RARE
  • Acute pancreatitis (severe stomach pain, nausea, vomiting caused by pancreas inflammation)
  • Jaundice (yellow skin) or liver inflammation
  • Low platelet count in blood (may lead to more bleeding and bruising)
  • Low fibrinogen in blood (a protein needed for blood clotting)
  • Severe allergic reactions (like anaphylaxis, which can cause difficulty breathing, low blood pressure, and fast pulse)
  • Liver failure
  • Severe skin rash with blisters and peeling skin (Stevens-Johnson syndrome)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to tigecycline or other tetracycline antibiotics, like minocycline or doxycycline.
  • Tell your doctor right away if you have diarrhea or get diarrhea during or after treatment. Do not take any anti-diarrhea medicine without asking your doctor first.
  • If you have liver problems, your doctor may change your dose.
  • Tell your doctor if you have a bleeding disorder or are taking blood thinners, as this medicine can affect how your blood clots.
  • Seek immediate medical attention if you experience severe stomach pain, nausea, and vomiting, as these could be symptoms of pancreatitis.

  • This medicine is not recommended for children under 8 years old because it can cause permanent tooth discoloration.
  • This medicine may cause dizziness, which can affect your ability to drive or operate machinery. Be careful.
