How to Use

Dosage

For adults, you get 100 mg first, then 50 mg every 12 hours. Children 8-11 years old get 1.2 mg per kg of body weight every 12 hours, up to a maximum of 50 mg every 12 hours. Teenagers 12-17 years old get 50 mg every 12 hours.

Method

This medicine is given into a vein (intravenously) over 30 to 60 minutes by a doctor or nurse.

Important

After the first dose, the highest amount you usually get in a day is 100 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea.
  • Abscess (a collection of pus), infections.
  • Laboratory tests showing your blood clots less easily.
  • Dizziness.
  • Irritation at the injection site in the vein, including pain, inflammation, swelling, or blockage.
  • Stomach pain, indigestion, or loss of appetite.
  • Increased liver enzymes, or high bilirubin levels in your blood (which can cause yellowing of the skin).
  • Itching or rash.
  • Poor or slow wound healing.
  • Headache.
  • Increased amylase levels (an enzyme from salivary glands and pancreas), or increased blood urea nitrogen (BUN) levels.
  • Pneumonia.
  • Low blood sugar.
  • Blood poisoning (sepsis) or septic shock (a life-threatening reaction to an infection).
  • Reaction at the injection site (pain, redness, or inflammation).
  • Low levels of protein in your blood.
RARE
  • Sudden inflammation of the pancreas (acute pancreatitis), causing severe stomach pain, nausea, and vomiting.
  • Jaundice (yellowing of the skin) or liver inflammation.
  • Low number of platelets in your blood (which can lead to more bleeding or bruising).
  • Low levels of fibrinogen in your blood (a protein needed for blood clotting).

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to tigecycline or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • If you are allergic to similar antibiotics (tetracyclines), you might also be allergic to this medicine.
  • Tell your doctor if your wound is not healing well or is slow to heal.
  • Tell your doctor right away if you have diarrhea before starting this medicine, or if you get it during or after treatment. Do not take diarrhea medicine without talking to your doctor first.
  • Tell your doctor if you have or have had liver problems.

  • Tell your doctor if you have a blocked bile duct.
  • Tell your doctor if you have a bleeding problem or take blood thinners, as this medicine can affect how your blood clots.
  • Tell your doctor right away if you get signs of an allergic reaction.
  • Tell your doctor right away if you get bad stomach pain, feel sick, or vomit, as these could be signs of a serious issue with your pancreas.
  • This medicine might make birth control pills less effective. Talk to your doctor about other birth control methods.
  • This medicine can make you feel dizzy, which might affect your ability to drive or use machines.
