How to Use

Dosage

Doses vary by age and condition; adults usually start with 50 micrograms daily, with maintenance between 100-200 micrograms.

Method

Take whole with a glass of water on an empty stomach before breakfast; for infants, dissolve in a small amount of water and give with extra liquid at least 30 minutes before the first meal.

Important

The usual maximum daily dose for adults is 200 micrograms, but always follow your doctor's instructions.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Fast heartbeat or palpitations.
  • Diarrhea or vomiting.
  • Weight loss, fever, or sweating.
  • Trouble sleeping, nervousness, headache, or shaking.
  • Muscle weakness or cramps, or changes in menstrual periods.
RARE
  • Serious heart problems, like angina pain or heart attack (especially if you already have heart disease).
  • Weakening of bones (osteoporosis) from long-term high doses.
  • Allergic reactions such as swelling of the face/throat, rash, hives, or hair loss.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to levothyroxine or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you have untreated adrenal or pituitary gland problems, or severe heart conditions like a recent heart attack or heart inflammation.
  • If you are pregnant, do not use Thyroxin with medicines that block thyroid function.
  • This medicine is not for weight loss. Do not increase your dose without your doctor's advice, especially if taking other weight-loss medicines.
  • Tell your doctor or lab staff if you are taking biotin, as it can affect the results of your thyroid hormone tests.
