How to Use

Dosage

Typically 100-200 micrograms once daily for adults. Start doses for adults can be 50 micrograms and for elderly 25 micrograms.

Method

Take the tablet on an empty stomach before breakfast with water. For infants, dissolve the tablet in a small amount of water and give it at least 30 minutes before the first meal.

Important

The maximum daily dose is usually 200 micrograms for adults.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Fast heartbeat, palpitations, irregular heartbeat
  • Diarrhea, vomiting, weight loss
  • Heat intolerance, fever, insomnia, restlessness
  • Headache, flushing, sweating, tremors
RARE
  • Chest pain (angina), severe irregular heartbeats, heart attack (especially in patients with heart disease)
  • Bone weakening (osteoporosis, osteopenia) due to long-term high doses
  • Swelling of the face and throat (angioedema), rash, hives, hair loss

Important Warnings

  • Do not take Thyroxin if you are allergic to levothyroxine or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you have untreated adrenal or pituitary gland problems, or acute heart conditions like a heart attack or severe heart inflammation.
  • Do not use this medicine for weight loss. Do not increase the dose without your doctor's instruction.
  • Tell your doctor or lab staff if you are taking biotin (Vitamin H, B7, or B8), as it can affect thyroid hormone test results.
  • If you switch to another levothyroxine medicine, the effect might be slightly different, and you may need more frequent check-ups and dose adjustments.
