How to Use

Dosage

The recommended starting dose is 23 mg of testosterone (one pump press) once daily, preferably in the morning.

Method

Apply the gel to clean, dry, healthy skin on your shoulders or upper arms using the applicator, allowing it to absorb through the skin.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 69 mg of testosterone (three pump presses).

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Skin irritation at the application site (rash, dry skin, redness)
  • High blood fat levels (triglycerides)
  • Increased blood pressure
  • Increased prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels, a protein made by the prostate
  • Increased red blood cell count (hematocrit), found in regular blood tests
RARE
  • Increased hemoglobin (a part of red blood cells that carries oxygen), found in regular blood tests
  • Headache

Important Warnings

  • Do not use Testavan if you are allergic to testosterone or any other ingredients, or if you have or might have prostate cancer or male breast cancer.
  • Never apply Testavan to your penis or testicles, or to broken, damaged, or irritated skin, including open wounds.
  • Women (especially pregnant or breastfeeding) and children should not touch the gel or skin where it has been applied.
  • Testosterone treatment can speed up existing prostate cancer. Your doctor will do tests before and during treatment.
  • Talk to your doctor before using Testavan if you have ever had trouble urinating due to an enlarged prostate, bone cancer, high blood pressure, severe heart, liver, or kidney disease, ischemic heart disease, blood clotting problems, epilepsy, migraines, or breathing problems while sleeping (sleep apnea).

  • Do not use moisturizing or sun protection creams on the same area at the same time or right after applying the gel.
  • To prevent the gel from transferring to others, use the applicator instead of your fingers, wash hands immediately if gel gets on them, cover the application area with clothing once dry, and shower or cover the area before close contact with anyone.
  • For your partner's safety, wash the application area with soap (e.g., in the shower) before sex. If not possible, wear a t-shirt to cover the area during skin-to-skin contact.
  • Testavan contains propylene glycol, which may irritate the skin.
  • Testavan contains alcohol (ethanol), which may cause a burning sensation on damaged skin.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. Start and continue therapy under specialist supervision. Consider risk of cardiovascular adverse effects and possibility of mental disorders. (updated 21.10.2024)
