  • Sleep disturbances

  • Hallucinations
  • Burning and dry eyes
  • Skin rashes and worsened psoriasis
  • Increased liver enzyme values
  • Impotence
  • Lupus-like syndrome (an autoimmune disease that mainly affects skin and joints)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to atenolol or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have a very slow heart rate or low blood pressure.
  • Do not use if you have untreated heart failure, a severe heart conduction problem (like second or third-degree AV block or sick sinus syndrome), or very poor circulation in your hands or feet.
  • Do not use if you have an untreated adrenal gland tumor (phaeochromocytoma) or severe lung disease like asthma.
  • Talk to your doctor before using if you have mild heart failure, mild circulation problems, a tendency for low blood sugar (especially with insulin treatment), mild asthma, Prinzmetal's angina, psoriasis, kidney problems, or strong allergic reactions.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Reduce the dose in moderately severe renal impairment. Significant adverse effects include bradycardia and orthostatic hypotension. Consider potential interactions especially with with drugs affecting the conduction system of the heart. (updated 20.1.2025)
