How to Use

Dosage

Usually one 40 mg tablet once daily. Your doctor may adjust the dose between 20 mg and 80 mg depending on your condition.

Method

Take the tablet at the same time each day with water or another non-alcoholic drink, with or without food.

Important

Maximum 80 mg per day. If you have liver problems, do not exceed 40 mg per day.

Possible Side Effects

  • Low blood pressure (hypotension) in patients treated to reduce cardiovascular events
RARE
  • Urinary infection
  • Upper respiratory infection (like sore throat or common cold)
  • Anemia (low red blood cells)
  • High potassium levels in blood
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Feeling sad or depressed
  • Fainting
  • Dizziness or spinning sensation
  • Slow heartbeat
  • Low blood pressure (in patients with high blood pressure)
  • Dizziness when standing up
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Cough
  • Stomach pain or upset stomach
  • Diarrhea
  • Bloating
  • Vomiting
  • Itching
  • More sweating than usual
  • Skin rashes (e.g., redness, hives, eczema, drug rash)
  • Back pain
  • Muscle cramps
  • Muscle pain
  • Worsening kidney function (including sudden kidney failure)
  • Chest pain
  • Feeling weak
  • Increased creatinine levels in blood
  • Sepsis (a severe body-wide infection, often called "blood poisoning," which can be life-threatening)
  • Increase in certain white blood cells (eosinophilia)
  • Low platelet count
  • Severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) or rapid swelling of the face and mucous membranes (angioedema), which can be life-threatening.
  • Low blood sugar (in diabetics)
  • Anxiety
  • Drowsiness
  • Blurred vision
  • Fast heartbeat
  • Dry mouth
  • Changes in taste
  • Liver problems (more common in Japanese patients)
  • Joint pain
  • Pain in arms or legs
  • Tendon pain
  • Flu-like symptoms
  • Decrease in hemoglobin in blood
  • Increase in uric acid, liver enzymes, or CPK in blood
  • Scarring of lung tissue (interstitial lung disease)
  • Intestinal angioedema (swelling in the gut, with abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to telmisartan or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not use during the second or third trimester of pregnancy. It's also best to avoid it in early pregnancy.
  • Do not use if you have severe liver problems.
  • Do not use if you have diabetes or kidney problems and are taking a blood pressure medicine containing aliskiren.
  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney disease, heart problems, low blood pressure, or diabetes.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category A
