How to Use

Dosage

The usual dose is one Telmisartan ratiopharm tablet once a day, typically 40 mg for high blood pressure or 80 mg to reduce heart event risks, but your doctor may prescribe a different dose.

Method

Take one tablet at the same time each day with water or another non-alcoholic drink, with or without food.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 80 mg. If you have liver problems, your dose should not exceed 40 mg per day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Low blood pressure (hypotension) in patients treated to reduce cardiovascular events.
RARE
  • Urinary tract infections, upper respiratory tract infections (e.g., sore throat, sinus inflammation, common cold)
  • Red blood cell deficiency (anemia)
  • High blood potassium level
  • Difficulty falling asleep
  • Low mood (depression)
  • Fainting
  • Feeling of dizziness (vertigo)
  • Slow heart rate (bradycardia)
  • Low blood pressure (hypotension) in patients with high blood pressure
  • Dizziness upon standing up (orthostatic hypotension)
  • Shortness of breath
  • Cough
  • Abdominal pain
  • Diarrhea
  • Stomach discomfort
  • Abdominal bloating
  • Vomiting
  • Itching
  • Increased sweating
  • Drug rash
  • Back pain
  • Muscle cramps
  • Muscle pain (myalgia)
  • Kidney failure including acute kidney failure
  • Chest pain
  • Feeling of weakness
  • Increase in blood creatinine level
  • Sepsis (often called "blood poisoning"); a severe infection with a whole-body inflammatory reaction that can lead to death
  • Increase in the number of certain white blood cells (eosinophilia)
  • Low number of platelets (thrombocytopenia)
  • Severe allergic reactions (anaphylactic reactions)
  • Allergic reactions (e.g., rash, itching, difficulty breathing, wheezing, facial swelling or low blood pressure)
  • Low blood sugar (in diabetics)
  • Anxiety
  • Drowsiness
  • Vision disturbances
  • Fast heart rate (tachycardia)
  • Dry mouth
  • Upset stomach
  • Taste disturbance (dysgeusia)
  • Abnormal liver function (this side effect is more common in Japanese patients)
  • Sudden swelling of the skin and mucous membranes, which can be life-threatening (angioedema, which can lead to death)
  • Eczema (skin disorder)
  • Skin redness
  • Hives (urticaria)
  • Severe drug rash
  • Joint pain (arthralgia)
  • Pain in limbs
  • Tendon pain
  • Flu-like illness
  • Decrease in hemoglobin level (a type of blood protein)
  • Increase in blood uric acid, liver enzyme or creatine kinase levels
  • Progressive scarring in the lungs (interstitial lung disease)
  • Intestinal angioedema: swelling in the gut with symptoms such as abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to telmisartan or any other ingredient in the medicine.
  • Do not use if you are more than 3 months pregnant. It is also advised to avoid it during early pregnancy.
  • Do not use if you have severe liver problems like cholestasis or bile duct obstruction.
  • Do not use if you have diabetes or kidney problems and are taking another blood pressure medicine called aliskiren.
  • Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant.

Category A
