How to Use

Dosage

Take one tablet each day. For high blood pressure, it's usually 40 mg. To help prevent heart problems, it's usually 80 mg. Your doctor might tell you to take a different dose.

Method

You can take the tablet with or without food. Swallow it with water or another drink that doesn't have alcohol. Try to take it at the same time every day.

Important

If your liver is not working well, do not take more than 40 mg a day. Otherwise, your doctor might have you take up to 80 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Low blood pressure (hypotension) if you are taking this medicine to help prevent heart or blood vessel problems.
RARE
  • Urinary tract infections (UTIs)
  • Upper respiratory infections (like sore throat, sinus infection, common cold)
  • Low red blood cell count (anemia)
  • High potassium in your blood
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Feeling sad (depression)
  • Fainting
  • Feeling dizzy or like the room is spinning (vertigo)
  • Slow heartbeat
  • Low blood pressure (if you are taking it for high blood pressure)
  • Feeling dizzy when you stand up quickly
  • Shortness of breath
  • Cough
  • Stomach pain
  • Diarrhea
  • Upset stomach
  • Swelling in your belly
  • Vomiting
  • Itchy skin
  • Sweating a lot
  • Skin rash from medicine
  • Back pain
  • Muscle cramps
  • Muscle pain
  • Kidney problems (including sudden kidney failure)
  • Chest pain
  • Feeling weak
  • High levels of creatinine in your blood
  • Severe blood infection (sepsis)
  • More of a certain type of white blood cell (eosinophilia)
  • Low platelet count (blood cells that help stop bleeding)
  • Severe allergic reactions (like anaphylaxis)
  • Allergic reactions (like rash, itching, trouble breathing, wheezing, face swelling, or low blood pressure)
  • Low blood sugar (in people with diabetes)
  • Feeling worried (anxiety)
  • Feeling sleepy
  • Trouble with your eyesight
  • Fast heartbeat
  • Dry mouth
  • Upset stomach
  • Changes in how things taste
  • Liver not working normally
  • Sudden swelling of your skin and mouth/throat (angioedema), which can be deadly
  • Skin problem (eczema)
  • Red skin
  • Hives (itchy red bumps)
  • Bad skin rash from medicine
  • Joint pain
  • Pain in your arms or legs
  • Tendon pain
  • Flu-like sickness
  • Lower levels of hemoglobin (a protein in your blood)
  • Higher levels of uric acid, liver enzymes, or creatine kinase in your blood
  • Scarring in the lungs (interstitial lung disease)
  • Swelling in the intestines (intestinal angioedema) with symptoms like stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to telmisartan or any other part of this medicine.
  • Do not use this medicine if you are more than 3 months pregnant or planning to get pregnant. It should also be avoided early in pregnancy.
  • Do not use this medicine if you have very bad liver problems, like a blocked bile duct.
  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney disease, heart problems, high potassium in your blood, diabetes, or low blood pressure.
  • Get help from a doctor right away if you have serious symptoms like signs of blood infection or sudden swelling of your face, lips, or throat (this is called angioedema).

Use in Elderly Patients

Category A

Suitable for older adults. Monitor renal function and potassium concentrations during the pharmacotherapy. Avoid concurrent use of NSAIDs. (updated 14.4.2025)
