How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide the exact dose based on your weight, age, and type of infection. For most infections in adults and children 12 years and older, initial doses are usually 6 to 12 mg per kg of body weight every 12 hours for the first few doses, followed by a maintenance dose of 6 to 12 mg per kg once a day. For gut infections caused by Clostridium difficile, the dose is 100 to 200 mg by mouth twice a day. Special doses apply for babies, younger children, or patients with kidney problems.

Method

A doctor or nurse will give you this medicine in a hospital as an injection into a vein or muscle, as an infusion into a vein (drip), or for some infections, orally.

Your doctor will decide the maximum daily dose, which depends on your condition and age.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Rash
  • Pain
  • Fever
RARE
  • Sudden life-threatening allergic reaction (signs may include difficulty breathing, wheezing, swelling, rash, itching, fever, chills)
  • Redness on the upper body
  • Blisters on the skin, mouth, eyes, or genitals (signs of very serious skin reactions like toxic epidermal necrolysis, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, or DRESS)
  • Swelling and blood clot in a vein
  • Difficulty breathing or wheezing
  • Getting infections more easily (this might mean low blood cell counts)
  • Low white blood cell count (signs can include fever, chills, sore throat, or mouth sores)
  • Low numbers of all types of blood cells
  • Kidney problems or changes in how your kidneys work (seen in tests, especially with higher doses)
  • Seizures
  • Problems at the injection site, like redness, pain, or swelling
  • Low number of blood platelets
  • Increased liver enzyme levels in your blood
  • Increased creatinine levels in your blood (checked to see how your kidneys are working)
  • Hearing loss, ringing in the ears, or feeling dizzy/like things are spinning
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Dizziness
  • Headache
  • Infection (abscess)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to teicoplanin or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Tell your doctor if you are allergic to an antibiotic called vancomycin.
  • Tell your doctor if you have ever had a 'red man' syndrome reaction (redness on your upper body).
  • Tell your doctor if you have a low number of blood platelets (cells that help blood clot).
  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney problems.
