How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor or nurse will decide your exact dose based on your weight and the type of infection you have.

Method

This medicine is usually given by a doctor or nurse as an injection into a vein or muscle, or as a slow drip (infusion) into a vein. For certain gut infections, it can be taken by mouth.

Your doctor will determine the maximum daily dose for you to ensure safe and effective treatment.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Skin rash, redness, or itching.
  • Pain.
  • Fever.
RARE
  • A sudden, life-threatening allergic reaction with symptoms like trouble breathing or wheezing, swelling, rash, itching, fever, or chills. Get medical help right away.
  • Redness on the upper body.
  • Blisters on the skin, in the mouth, eyes, or genitals (signs of severe skin conditions like Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis, Stevens-Johnson Syndrome, or DRESS). Get medical help right away.
  • Swelling and a blood clot in a vein. Get medical help right away.
  • Difficulty breathing or wheezing (bronchospasm). Get medical help right away.
  • Getting infections more easily than usual (which can be a sign of low blood cell counts). Get medical help right away.
  • Low white blood cells, with symptoms like fever, severe chills, sore throat, or mouth sores. Get medical help right away.
  • Low levels of all types of blood cells. Get medical help right away.
  • Kidney problems or changes in how your kidneys work (seen in tests). Higher doses can increase the risk or severity of kidney issues. Get medical help right away.
  • Seizures (epileptic attacks). Get medical help right away.
  • Decreased number of platelets in your blood.
  • Increased liver enzyme levels in your blood.
  • Increased creatinine levels in your blood (measured to check kidney function).
  • Hearing loss, ringing in the ears, or feeling like you or your surroundings are moving.
  • Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea.
  • Dizziness or headache.
  • Infection (abscess).
  • Problems at the injection site, such as redness, pain, or swelling.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to teicoplanin or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Tell your doctor if you are allergic to an antibiotic called vancomycin.
  • Tell your doctor if you have a red rash on your upper body (sometimes called 'red man' syndrome).
  • Tell your doctor if you have a low blood platelet count.
  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney problems.
