How to Use

Dosage

The typical dose for adults ranges from 150 to 1600 MBq, depending on the examination. For children, the dose is based on their weight.

Method

This medicine is given as an injection into a vein in your arm or leg. For heart studies, you might receive two injections, one during stress and one at rest.

Important

The total maximum dose for a one-day heart study protocol is 1600 MBq.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Metallic or bitter taste in mouth, altered sense of smell, dry mouth.
  • Headache, chest pain, abnormal EKG, nausea.
RARE
  • Irregular heartbeat, local reactions at the injection site, stomach ache, indigestion, fever, fainting, seizures, dizziness, flushing, skin numbness or tingling, tiredness, temporary joint pain.
  • Erythema multiforme (a widespread skin and mucous membrane rash).

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to Technescan Sestamibi or any of its ingredients.
  • Tell your doctor if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or have kidney, liver, or heart problems like unusual heart rhythm or chest pain during exercise.
  • Before the procedure, you might need to fast for at least 4 hours (for heart imaging) and drink plenty of water to urinate often after the test.
  • After the injection, avoid close contact with small children and pregnant women for 24 hours, and urinate frequently to help remove the medicine from your body.
