How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor or nurse will determine your specific dose, which often starts with 6 mg per kilogram of body weight every 12 hours for the first three doses, then 6 mg per kilogram once a day for most infections.

Method

This medicine is usually given as an injection into a vein or muscle, or as a drip into a vein. For certain gut infections, it can also be taken by mouth.

Important

Your doctor will decide your maximum daily dose, which is usually no more than 12 mg per kg of body weight for injections, or 400 mg if taken by mouth for specific infections.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Rash, redness, itching
  • Pain
  • Fever
RARE
  • Severe allergic reactions (e.g., trouble breathing, swelling, hives, fever, chills); serious skin reactions like blistering or widespread rash with fever.
  • Changes in blood tests (e.g., low platelets or white blood cells, increased liver enzymes, kidney problems); kidney problems or changes in how your kidneys work.
  • Hearing loss, ringing in the ears, dizziness, headache, or seizures.
  • Nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea.
  • Redness, pain, or swelling at the injection site; fever, severe chills, sore throat, mouth sores (could be low white blood cells); increased infections (could be low platelets); 'red man' syndrome (redness of the upper body).

Important Warnings

  • Do not use Targocid if you are allergic to teicoplanin or vancomycin, or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • If you get a severe rash, blistering skin, or other serious skin reactions (like Stevens-Johnson syndrome or DRESS), stop using this medicine and see a doctor right away.
  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney problems or if you are taking other medicines that can affect your hearing or kidneys, as your doctor may need to monitor you closely.
  • If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, talk to your doctor before using this medicine, as there might be risks to the baby.
  • This medicine can cause headaches or dizziness. If this happens, do not drive or use machines.
