How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide your dose, typically 6 to 12 mg per kg of body weight, once a day.

Method

This medicine is usually given as an injection into a vein or muscle, or as a drip into a vein. For certain gut infections, it can be taken by mouth.

Important

The maximum daily dose for adults without kidney problems is usually 12 mg per kg of body weight, decided by your doctor.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Rash, redness, itching
  • Pain
  • Fever
RARE
  • Sudden life-threatening allergic reaction (symptoms include difficulty breathing, wheezing, swelling, rash, itching, fever, chills)
  • Swelling or blood clot in a vein
  • Difficulty breathing or wheezing (bronchospasm)
  • Getting infections more easily, which can be a sign of low blood platelets
  • Decrease in blood platelet count (seen in tests)
  • Increased liver enzymes in blood (seen in tests)
  • Increased creatinine levels in blood (monitored for kidney function)
  • Hearing loss, ringing in the ears (tinnitus), or feeling like you or things around you are moving (vertigo)
  • Nausea or vomiting, diarrhea
  • Dizziness or headache
  • Redness of the upper body (called 'red man syndrome')
  • Infection (abscess)
  • Blisters on the skin, in the mouth, eyes, or genitals (signs of 'toxic epidermal necrolysis' or 'Stevens-Johnson syndrome')
  • Red, peeling, widespread rash with bumps under the skin and blisters, accompanied by fever (signs of 'acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis')
  • Drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS) - flu-like symptoms, rash on face spreading, high fever, swollen lymph nodes
  • Fever, severe chills, sore throat, or mouth sores (can be signs of a lack of white blood cells)
  • Low levels of all types of blood cells
  • Kidney problems or changes in kidney function (seen in tests, can be worse with higher doses)
  • Seizures
  • Redness, pain, or swelling at the injection site

Important Warnings

  • Do not use Targocid if you are allergic to teicoplanin or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Stop taking this medicine and tell your doctor immediately if you get a serious skin rash or other skin problems, such as blistering or peeling skin, a red and scaly rash with bumps under the skin, or a rash with fever and swollen lymph nodes.
  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney problems or are taking other medicines that can affect your hearing or kidneys.
  • Inform your doctor if you are allergic to vancomycin (another antibiotic), have had 'red man syndrome' (redness on the upper body), or have low blood platelets.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, discuss with your doctor before using this medicine.
