How to Use

Dosage

The usual dose for adults and young people over 12 years is 2 g.

Method

Apply the cream in a thick layer on the skin and cover with a dressing. Remove the dressing just before the procedure.

Important

The maximum dose for leg ulcer cleaning is 10 g. For other uses, follow your doctor's instructions.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Temporary local skin reactions like pale skin, redness, or swelling in the treated area.
  • Mild burning, itching, or warmth in the treated area at first.
  • Numbness or tingling in the treated area on genital mucous membranes.
  • Irritation of the treated skin on leg ulcers.
RARE
  • Allergic reactions, such as rash, swelling, fever, difficulty breathing, and fainting (anaphylactic shock).
  • Methemoglobinemia (a blood disorder).
  • Small, pinpoint bleeding in the treated skin area, especially in children with eczema and prolonged use.
  • Eye irritation if the cream accidentally gets into the eyes.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use Tapin if you are allergic to lidocaine, prilocaine, other similar numbing medicines, or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Tell your doctor if you or your child has a rare blood condition called glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency.
  • Tell your doctor if you or your child has a blood condition called methemoglobinemia.
  • Do not use Tapin on rashes, cuts, scrapes, or open wounds, except for leg ulcers.
  • If you or your child has eczema, you might not need to leave the medicine on for a long time. Using it for more than 30 minutes can cause more skin irritation.

  • Tell your doctor if you are taking medicines for an irregular heartbeat (like amiodarone).
  • Avoid getting the cream in your eyes as it can cause irritation. If it gets in your eyes, rinse immediately with plenty of water and protect your eyes until feeling returns.
  • Do not use Tapin on a damaged eardrum.
  • Do not use Tapin for children under 12 months who are taking other medicines that affect blood pigment levels (like sulfonamides).
  • Do not use Tapin for premature babies.
  • Do not use Tapin on the following skin areas: cuts, scrapes, and wounds (except leg ulcers), rashes, around the eyes, inside the nose, ears, or mouth, the anus, or on children's genitals.
