How to Use

Dosage

The usual dose for adults is 40–60 mg of prilocaine hydrochloride (2–3 ml of Takipril).

Method

A doctor will give you Takipril as an injection into the fluid around your spinal cord in the lower back, while you are sitting or lying down.

Important

The maximum daily dose is 80 mg of prilocaine hydrochloride (4 ml of Takipril).

Possible Side Effects

  • Methemoglobinemia (a blood disorder affecting oxygen transport)
  • Bluish skin and lips (cyanosis) due to low blood oxygen
  • Severe allergic reactions (including anaphylactic shock)
  • Itching
  • Inflammation of membranes around the spinal cord (arachnoiditis)
  • Nerve damage (numbness or weakness in arms and legs, peripheral nerve damage)
  • Double vision
  • Cardiac arrest
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Respiratory depression (breathing difficulties)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to prilocaine hydrochloride, other amide-type local anesthetics, or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you have severe heart conduction problems, untreated heart failure, heart shock due to pump failure, very low blood pressure, low blood volume, or other heart conditions like heart block or arrhythmia.
  • Do not take if you have severe anemia, congenital or acquired methemoglobinemia, or problems with blood clotting.
  • Do not take if you have a skin infection at or near the injection site.
  • Do not take if you have general or specific contraindications for spinal anesthesia, central nervous system disease (e.g., meningitis, polio, spinal cord problems due to anemia), severe headache, brain/spinal tumors, spinal tuberculosis, recent spinal injury, multiple sclerosis, hemiplegia, paraplegia, or neuromuscular diseases.

  • Do not take if you have liver or kidney problems.
  • Do not take if your general health is poor.
  • Do not take if you have acute porphyria, fluid in the lungs, or sepsis (blood poisoning).
  • Takipril must not be injected directly into a blood vessel.
  • Takipril is not recommended for children and adolescents and must not be given to children younger than 6 months due to an increased risk of a blood disorder called methemoglobinemia.
  • Prilocaine should not be used for local or regional anesthesia during childbirth.
  • Do not drive or operate tools or machinery, as Takipril may temporarily affect your reactions and muscle coordination.
