Symbicort is an asthma medicine inhaler that contains two drugs: one reduces swelling in your lungs, and the other opens your airways to make breathing easier.

How to Use

Dosage

For adults and adolescents (12-17 years), the usual dose is 2-4 puffs twice a day, or as directed by your doctor.

Method

Inhale the medicine as prescribed by your doctor. Shake the inhaler well before each use. Place the mouthpiece between your teeth, close your lips, and inhale slowly and deeply while pressing the dose counter. Hold your breath for about 10 seconds. Rinse your mouth with water after use.

Important

Do not take more than 12 puffs at once. The maximum daily dose is 24 puffs in 24 hours.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Palpitations, tremor (shaking). These are usually mild and go away as you continue treatment.
  • Oral thrush (a fungal infection in the mouth). Rinsing your mouth with water after each dose can help prevent this.
  • Mild throat irritation, coughing, hoarseness.
  • Headache.
RARE
  • Restlessness, nervousness, agitation.
  • Sleep problems.
  • Dizziness.
  • Nausea (feeling sick).
  • Fast heartbeat.
  • Skin bruising.
  • Muscle cramps.
  • Blurred vision.
  • Rash, itching.
  • Sudden tightening of the airways (bronchospasm) causing wheezing. If this happens, stop Symbicort and contact your doctor immediately.
  • Low potassium levels in the blood.
  • Irregular heartbeat.
  • Depression.
  • Behavior changes, especially in children.
  • Chest pain or tightness.
  • Increased blood sugar (glucose) levels.
  • Changes in taste, such as an unpleasant taste in the mouth.
  • Changes in blood pressure.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to budesonide, formoterol, or any other ingredients in Symbicort.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have diabetes, a lung infection, high blood pressure, heart problems, thyroid or adrenal gland issues, low blood potassium, or severe liver disease.
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you experience swelling of the face, tongue, or throat, rash, hives with breathing difficulties, or sudden fainting, as these could be signs of a serious allergic reaction.
  • Stop using Symbicort and contact your doctor immediately if you experience sudden wheezing or shortness of breath right after using the inhaler.
