How to Use

Dosage

The anesthesiologist will determine your exact dose based on your age, weight, and type of surgery.

Method

Suprane is given as a vapor to breathe in through a mask or breathing tube. You might also get another medicine by injection before Suprane.

Important

The anesthesiologist will decide when to stop the Suprane treatment. There is no general maximum daily dose for patients to administer themselves.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Irregular breathing or pauses in breathing.
  • Throat spasms and difficulty breathing.
  • Vomiting.
  • Nausea.
  • Changes in heartbeat (irregular, slow, or fast).
  • Increased blood pressure.
  • Headache.
  • Eye irritation (redness, inflammation, tearing).
  • Cough.
  • Increased saliva.
  • Sore throat or throat irritation.
RARE
  • Chest pain, anxiety, or shortness of breath (may be due to a blood clot in the heart).
  • Low oxygen levels in the blood.
  • Dizziness or lightheadedness (possibly due to low blood pressure).
  • Muscle pain or weakness.
  • Agitation or restlessness.
  • Sudden heart stoppage (cardiac arrest).
  • Severe problems with heart rhythm (very fast or irregular).
  • Breathing stops (respiratory arrest).
  • Asthma-like symptoms or severe trouble breathing.
  • Coughing up blood.
  • Severe stomach pain and fever (inflammation of the pancreas).
  • Muscle breakdown (muscle pain, weakness, or dark urine).
  • Confusion, severe headache, or loss of consciousness (due to brain issues or too much acid in the blood).
  • Eye pain, blurry vision, temporary blindness, or eye injury.
  • Very high blood pressure (malignant hypertension).
  • Shock (when your body is not getting enough blood flow).
  • Malignant hyperthermia (sudden, very high body temperature with muscle stiffness).
  • Severe liver problems (liver failure, jaundice, or other liver issues).
  • Bleeding tendency (blood takes longer to clot).
  • Seizures.
  • Yellowing of skin or eyes (jaundice).
  • Red rash or hives.
  • Muscle weakness, confusion, or speech problems (due to too much potassium in the blood).
  • Weakness or reduced muscle strength (due to too little potassium in the blood).
  • Migraine.
  • Heart palpitations (feeling your heart pound).
  • Tingling or burning sensation on the skin.
  • General discomfort or feeling unwell.
  • Unexpected conditions after surgery.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to desflurane or other anesthetics.
  • Do not use if you have or might have malignant hyperthermia (a sudden, dangerous rise in body temperature during or after surgery).
  • Do not use if you have had liver problems after previous anesthesia.
  • Do not use as the only anesthetic to make you fall asleep if you have a risk of coronary artery disease.
  • Do not use as the only anesthetic to make you fall asleep if an increase in heart rate or blood pressure is not wanted.
