How to Use

Dosage

The usual dose for adults is one 50 mg tablet. Some patients may need 100 mg.

Method

Take Sumatriptan Teva as soon as you notice the first signs of a migraine. You can also take it during an ongoing attack. Swallow the tablet whole with water. If swallowing is difficult, you can break the tablet in half and take it in two parts.

Important

Do not take more than 2 tablets (100 mg total) within a 24-hour period.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Drowsiness
  • Dizziness
  • Tingling sensations
  • Temporary increase in blood pressure, appearing soon after taking the medicine
  • Flushing
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Sensation of tightness, which is usually temporary but can be intense and occur anywhere in the body, including the chest and neck.
  • Muscle pain
  • Pain
  • Sensation of heat or cold, pressure or tightness. These symptoms can be intense and occur anywhere in the body, including the chest and neck.
  • Shortness of breath
  • Feeling of weakness
  • Tiredness
RARE
  • Skin allergic reactions: Rash, such as red spots and hives.
  • Anaphylaxis: A severe allergic reaction that can cause swelling of eyelids, face or lips, sudden shortness of breath, and tightness in the chest.
  • Nystagmus (involuntary eye movement back and forth).
  • Scotoma (dark spots in the visual field).
  • Tremor and dystonia (involuntary muscle spasms).
  • Seizures, usually in people with epilepsy.
  • Vision disturbances (flashing, double vision, worsening vision, permanent vision loss). These can also be caused by the migraine itself.
  • Heart issues like fast or slow heart rate, palpitations, irregular heart rhythm, severe coronary artery symptoms, heart attack, or temporary ECG changes related to lack of oxygen in the heart.
  • Low blood pressure; Raynaud's phenomenon (pale or bluish skin, and/or pain in fingers, toes, ears, nose, or jaw in cold weather or stress).
  • Inflammation of the large intestine, which may appear as lower abdominal pain on the left side and bloody diarrhea (ischemic colitis).
  • Diarrhea
  • Joint pain
  • Anxiety
  • Stiff neck
  • Excessive sweating
  • If you have recently been injured or had an inflammation (like rheumatism or intestinal inflammation), you may experience pain or worsening pain at the site of injury or inflammation.
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Serotonin syndrome: Symptoms include restlessness, hallucinations, coordination difficulties, rapid heart rate, rapid blood pressure changes, elevated body temperature, overactive reflexes, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to sumatriptan or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have had a heart attack, or if you have heart disease or symptoms of it (e.g., chest pain).
  • Do not use if you have had a stroke or a mini-stroke (TIA).
  • Do not use if you have circulation problems in your legs that cause cramping pain when walking.
  • Do not use if you have uncontrolled high blood pressure, even with medication.

  • Do not use if you have severe liver problems.
  • Do not use if you have recently taken other migraine medicines like ergotamine or its relatives, or other triptans. Wait at least 24 hours after another triptan and 6 hours after ergotamine.
  • Do not use if you have recently taken depression medicines called MAO inhibitors.
  • Do not use if you are over 65 years old.
  • Only use this medicine for migraines diagnosed by a doctor. If your headache does not feel like a typical migraine, talk to your doctor first.
  • Taking too much of this medicine can lead to chronic or worsening headaches.
  • This medicine can cause drowsiness. Do not drive or operate machinery if you feel tired.
