How to Use

Dosage

For adults aged 18-65, the usual dose is one 50 mg Sumatriptan Sandoz tablet. Some patients may need 100 mg. Always follow your doctor's instructions.

Method

Swallow the tablet whole with water. Take it as soon as you feel a migraine coming on, but you can also take it later during an attack. Do not use it to prevent an attack.

Important

Do not take more than 300 mg in any 24-hour period. This means a maximum of six 50 mg tablets or three 100 mg tablets.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Dizziness, drowsiness
  • Tingling or numbness
  • Temporary rise in blood pressure
  • Hot flashes
  • Shortness of breath
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Feeling of heaviness, pressure, or tightness in the chest, throat, or other body parts. These can be strong but usually pass.
  • Muscle pain
  • Weakness or tiredness
RARE
  • Breast pain
  • Minor changes in liver function tests
  • Severe allergic reactions (rash, hives, breathing difficulties, swelling, fainting)
  • Seizures
  • Tremor, muscle twitching, problems with movement control
  • Vision changes like flashing lights, double vision, reduced vision, or even permanent vision loss. These can also be migraine symptoms.
  • Changes in heart rate (slow or fast), palpitations, irregular heartbeat, temporary heart blood flow problems, chest pain, or heart attack. Get immediate medical help for chest pain.
  • Low blood pressure, poor circulation in arms and legs (like Raynaud's syndrome)
  • Inflammation of the colon due to blood flow problems
  • Diarrhea
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Stiff neck
  • Joint pain
  • Unusual fear with physical symptoms (like sweating, tension, fast heartbeat)
  • Excessive sweating
  • Pain or worsening pain at an injury or inflammation site

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to sumatriptan or any other ingredient in this medicine, or to sulfonamide antibiotics. Seek immediate medical help if you experience signs of an allergic reaction like rash, hives, difficulty breathing, swollen face/lips/eyelids, or fainting.
  • Do not take if you have heart problems like narrowed arteries, chest pain (angina), or if you've had a heart attack. If you feel chest pain or tightness after taking this medicine, get medical help right away.
  • Do not take if you have circulation problems in your legs causing cramp-like pain when walking.
  • Do not take if you have had a stroke or a mini-stroke (TIA).
  • Do not take if you have high blood pressure, unless your mild high blood pressure is being treated.

  • Do not take if you have severe liver disease.
  • Do not take with other migraine medicines containing ergotamine or other triptans. You must stop taking these medicines at least 24 hours before taking Sumatriptan Sandoz, and wait 6-24 hours after Sumatriptan Sandoz before taking them again.
  • Do not take if you are using MAO inhibitors (for depression or Parkinson's disease) or have used them in the last two weeks.
  • If you use Sumatriptan Sandoz too often, your headaches might get worse. If this happens, talk to your doctor.
  • Tell your doctor if you have had seizures before, or have conditions that increase your risk of seizures (e.g., head injury, alcoholism).
  • If you are pregnant, planning to get pregnant, or breastfeeding, ask your doctor for advice. Do not breastfeed for 12 hours after taking this medicine and discard any milk produced during this time.
  • This medicine can make you drowsy. Do not drive or operate machinery if you feel drowsy.
  • Tell your doctor if you are taking medicines for depression (like SSRIs or SNRIs) or St. John's Wort, as this can increase side effects or cause a serious condition called serotonin syndrome.
  • This medicine is not recommended for children under 18 or adults over 65.
