How to Use

Dosage

The usual dose for adults is one 50 mg tablet. Some people may need a 100 mg tablet. Always follow your doctor's instructions.

Method

Swallow the tablet whole with water.

Important

Do not take more than 300 mg (e.g., six 50 mg tablets or three 100 mg tablets) within 24 hours.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Dizziness, drowsiness.
  • Temporary increase in blood pressure (shortly after taking), flushing.
  • Breathing difficulties.
  • Nausea, vomiting.
  • Muscle pain.
  • Feeling weak, tiredness.
  • Unusual feelings like numbness, tingling, warmth, or cold.
RARE
  • Breast pain.
  • Changes in liver function (abnormal liver blood tests).
  • Anxiety.
  • Seizures (epileptic fits), involuntary movements, tremor, uncontrolled eye movements.
  • Vision problems (flashes, reduced vision, vision loss - may also be due to the migraine itself).
  • Heart problems (fast, slow, or irregular heartbeat, chest pain like angina, or heart attack).
  • Low blood pressure, Raynaud's syndrome (fingers and toes become white and numb).
  • Inflammation of the large intestine (symptoms include pain in the lower left abdomen and bloody diarrhea), diarrhea, difficulty swallowing.
  • Excessive sweating.
  • Stiff neck, joint pain.
  • Pain or worsening pain at the site of injury or inflammation (e.g., rheumatism, colon inflammation).
  • Allergic skin reactions (rash with red spots or hives).
  • Severe allergic reactions (swelling of eyelids, face, or lips, sudden wheezing, fast heartbeat, chest tightness, or fainting).

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to sumatriptan or any other ingredients of this medicine.
  • Do not take if you have heart problems like coronary artery disease, chest pain (angina), or have had a heart attack.
  • Do not take if you have poor circulation in your legs that causes cramp-like pain when walking.
  • Do not take if you have had a stroke or a mini-stroke (TIA).
  • Do not take if you have uncontrolled high blood pressure.

  • Do not take if you have severe liver disease.
  • Do not take if you are taking other migraine medicines like ergotamine, methysergide, or other triptans (e.g., naratriptan, zolmitriptan).
  • Do not take if you are taking MAO-inhibitor antidepressants, or have taken them in the last two weeks.
  • Talk to your doctor if you are a heavy smoker, use nicotine replacement, are a man over 40, or a woman past menopause, as these factors can increase the risk of heart problems.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have had seizures or have other conditions that increase your risk of seizures (e.g., head injury, alcoholism).
  • Talk to your doctor if you have liver or kidney disease.
  • Talk to your doctor if you are allergic to sulfonamide antibiotics, as you might also be allergic to sumatriptan.
  • Talk to your doctor if you take sumatriptan often, as this can make your headaches worse.
  • Seek immediate medical help if you experience chest pain or tightness after taking sumatriptan, especially if it doesn't go away quickly or gets worse, as it could be a heart attack.
  • If you take antidepressants called SSRIs or SNRIs, tell your doctor. Taking them with Sumatriptan Orion can cause a serious condition called serotonin syndrome. Seek immediate medical help if you get symptoms like restlessness, confusion, sweating, or fast heartbeat.
  • Avoid taking Sumatriptan Orion with St. John's Wort, as it can increase the risk of side effects.
  • Tell your doctor if you take lithium for bipolar disorder, as combining it with Sumatriptan Orion can cause serotonin syndrome.
  • If you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, talk to your doctor before taking this medicine.
  • Do not breastfeed for 12 hours after taking this medicine. Discard any milk expressed during this time.
  • This medicine or migraine itself can make you drowsy. Do not drive or operate machinery if you feel affected.
