How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide your dose based on your weight and how much muscle relaxant you still have in your body. Usually, it's 2-4 mg per kg of body weight for all ages. For adults needing a very quick recovery, up to 16 mg per kg can be given.

Method

This medicine is given as a single injection into a vein by your anesthetic doctor or under their supervision.

Important

The maximum dose for adults for very fast recovery is 16 mg per kg of body weight. Your doctor will determine the appropriate dose for your situation.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Cough
  • Breathing problems, such as coughing or moving like you're waking up or taking a breath.
  • Light anesthesia, meaning you might start to wake up from deep sleep and need more anesthetic, which can cause you to move or cough at the end of the surgery.
  • Complications during the procedure, such as changes in heart rate, coughing, or movement.
  • A drop in blood pressure caused by the surgery.
RARE
  • Shortness of breath due to muscle spasms in the airways (bronchospasm), especially in patients with a history of lung problems.
  • Allergic reactions (drug hypersensitivity) such as rash, red skin, swelling of the tongue and/or throat, breathing difficulties, changes in blood pressure or heart rate, which can sometimes lead to a severe drop in blood pressure. Severe allergic reactions can be life-threatening.
  • Return of muscle relaxation after surgery (indicating incomplete or re-occurring reversal).
  • Severe slowing of the heart rate, including a very slow pulse or even cardiac arrest, may occur when sugammadex is given.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to sugammadex or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney disease, liver disease, fluid buildup in your body, or blood clotting problems (increased bleeding risk).
  • The effect of sugammadex can be weakened by certain other medicines, such as toremifene (for breast cancer) or fusidic acid (an antibiotic). Be sure to tell your doctor about all medicines you are taking.
  • Sugammadex may make hormonal birth control (pills, rings, implants) less effective. You should use an extra non-hormonal birth control method (like condoms) for the next 7 days and follow your birth control product's instructions for missed doses.
  • This medicine may affect blood test results for the hormone progesterone. Tell your doctor if you are having your progesterone levels checked on the same day you receive sugammadex.
