How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide the right dose for you based on your age, weight, health, and the type of surgery.

Method

A doctor will give you this medicine as an injection into a vein (intravenously) or into the space around your spinal cord (epidurally) before your surgery.

Important

The maximum daily dose is individually determined by your doctor.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to sufentanil, other morphine-like medicines, or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have a condition that causes breathing difficulties, such as asthma or chronic bronchitis.
  • Do not use if you are taking antidepressants called MAO inhibitors; treatment must be stopped 2 weeks before surgery.
  • Do not use if you have a rare liver condition called acute hepatic porphyria.
  • Do not use if you are currently taking or have recently taken other strong pain medications like nalbuphine, buprenorphine, or pentazocine.

  • Do not use intravenously if you are giving birth or having a C-section and the umbilical cord has not yet been clamped.
  • Do not use epidurally if you have severe bleeding or shock.
  • Do not use epidurally if you have a severe infection or inflammation at the injection site.
  • Do not use epidurally if you have a wound that is healing poorly.
  • Do not use epidurally if you have changes in your blood cells or are taking blood thinners.
  • This medicine can cause sleep problems and pauses in breathing during sleep. Tell your doctor if you notice these symptoms.
  • Use with extreme caution if you have lung, liver, kidney, or thyroid disease, or if you have alcoholism.
  • Use with caution if you have high pressure inside your skull or a head injury.
  • This medicine can lower blood pressure and slow your heart rate if you have low blood volume.
  • Involuntary muscle twitching may occur.
  • This medicine can cause dependence and misuse. Talk to your doctor if you are concerned.
  • Be careful if you take other sedatives, as they can increase drowsiness and severe breathing problems.
  • Do not drive or operate machinery for 24 hours after receiving this medicine.
