How to Use

Dosage

The dosage is determined by your doctor based on your individual needs, age, weight, and general health.

Method

Sufenta or Sufenta Forte is given as an injection, either into a vein (intravenously) for general anesthesia or pain relief, or into the epidural space for pain relief, especially after surgery or during childbirth.

Important

Your doctor will determine the maximum daily dose for you. For epidural use during childbirth, the total dose should not exceed 30 micrograms.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Tiredness
  • Itching
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Abnormally slow or weak breathing, or temporary stopping of breathing
  • Spasms in airways and throat
  • Hiccups
  • Slow, fast, or irregular heartbeat
  • Low or high blood pressure
  • Muscle stiffness or involuntary muscle spasms (e.g., slow, stiff, or jerky movements, including in newborns)
  • Sudden muscle twitching
  • Reduced (in newborns), increased, or abnormal muscle tone
  • Convulsions
  • Dizziness
  • Headache
RARE
  • Cardiac arrest or respiratory arrest, heart rhythm disturbances (atrial-ventricular block), abnormal ECG
  • Insufficient blood flow to body tissues (shock), bluish skin and mucous membranes (including in newborns) due to lack of oxygen in blood
  • Coma, nervousness, drowsiness, apathy
  • Fluid in lungs, sneezing, nasal discharge and congestion, cough, hoarseness
  • Paleness, chills, fever, elevated or lowered body temperature
  • Vision disturbances, small pupils
  • Urinary retention or inability to control urination
  • Pain, including back pain and injection site pain, and injection site reactions
  • Allergic rash, itching, severe sweating, red skin, rash (also in newborns), dry skin, skin discoloration
  • Severe allergic reactions with symptoms like rash, itching, shortness of breath, or facial swelling.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to sufentanil, other opioids, or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not receive this medicine intravenously if you are giving birth or having a C-section, as it may harm the newborn's breathing.
  • Inform your doctor if you have severe bleeding, shock, blood poisoning, or inflammation at the injection site.
  • Tell your doctor if you have blood clotting disorders, are taking blood thinners, or any other medication that prevents epidural administration.
  • Discuss with your doctor if you have an underactive thyroid, lung disease, reduced breathing, or liver/kidney problems.

  • Inform your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
  • Be aware that repeated use of opioid pain relievers can reduce their effectiveness and lead to dependence or misuse, which can cause life-threatening overdose. Talk to your doctor if you are concerned about dependence.
  • Consult your doctor if you experience increased pain sensitivity despite higher doses, or if you have sleep-related breathing problems like sleep apnea.
  • Avoid driving or operating machinery as this medicine can affect your alertness.
