How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide the right dose for you and may adjust it based on how the medicine affects you.

Method

Place the Subutex tablet under your tongue and let it dissolve, which usually takes 5-10 minutes; do not chew or swallow the tablet.

Important

Take your dose once a day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Constipation
  • Headache
  • Trouble sleeping (insomnia)
  • Feeling very tired (fatigue)
  • Feeling sleepy (drowsiness)
  • Feeling sick or throwing up (nausea/vomiting)
  • Weakness
  • Fainting
  • Sweating
  • Dizziness, especially when standing up quickly
RARE
  • Severe breathing difficulties (respiratory depression)
  • Liver problems
  • Seeing or hearing things that aren't there (hallucinations)
  • Tightening of airways in the lungs (bronchospasm)
  • Swelling (fluid retention)
  • Severe and/or sudden allergic reaction

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to buprenorphine or any other ingredient in Subutex.
  • Do not take if you are under 15 years old.
  • Do not take if you have severe breathing problems.
  • Do not take if you have severe liver problems.
  • Do not take if you are drunk or have consumed alcohol recently.

  • Do not take if you are breastfeeding.
  • Subutex can cause withdrawal symptoms if taken less than 4 hours after using other opioids like morphine or heroin.
  • Subutex can make you sleepy, and this effect can be made worse by alcohol or other medicines that calm you down.
  • Using Subutex with certain antidepressants can lead to a serious condition called serotonin syndrome.
  • Severe liver problems have occurred with this medicine; tell your doctor immediately if you feel very tired, lose your appetite, or if your skin or eyes turn yellow.
  • Subutex can cause breathing problems during sleep, like sleep apnea (pauses in breathing) or low oxygen levels.
  • Subutex can cause dependence and addiction.
  • Stopping Subutex treatment suddenly can cause withdrawal symptoms.
