Stesolid is used to calm you down, reduce anxiety, and prevent or treat seizures, including fever-related seizures in children.

How to Use

Dosage

Adults usually take 10 mg. Elderly or frail patients take 5 mg. For children, the dose varies based on age and weight, typically 5 mg or 10 mg, or 0.5-1 mg per kg for fever-related seizures.

Method

Administer the rectal solution into the rectum.

Important

For acute fever-related seizures in children, do not exceed 20 mg in one dose. For preventing fever-related seizures, do not exceed 10 mg in one dose (given twice daily). For adults, the maximum daily dose should be determined by a doctor.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Drowsiness
  • Fatigue
  • Withdrawal symptoms (e.g., anxiety, panic attacks, tremors)
  • Confusion
  • Loss of muscle coordination, tremors, and other movement disorders
RARE
  • Very slow or shallow breathing (respiratory depression)
  • Muscle weakness
  • Memory loss, difficulty concentrating
  • Balance problems, dizziness
  • Headache
  • Slurred speech
  • Stomach and bowel problems like nausea, vomiting, constipation, diarrhea
  • Increased saliva, dry mouth, increased mucus
  • Allergic skin reactions (itching, redness, swelling, rash)
  • Stopped breathing (respiratory arrest)
  • Unconsciousness
  • Yellow skin or eyes (jaundice)
  • Strange reactions like being restless, angry, having nightmares, or seeing/hearing things that aren't there
  • Changes in blood cell counts (seen in blood tests), low white blood cells
  • Reduced alertness, depression, emotional flatness
  • Insomnia (sleep problems), speech disorders
  • Heart problems like slow heartbeat, heart failure, and cardiac arrest
  • Low blood pressure, fainting
  • Increased appetite
  • Difficulty urinating, urinary incontinence
  • Male breast enlargement, changes in sexual desire
  • Severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) with sudden wheezing, swelling of lips/tongue/throat/body, rash, fainting, or difficulty swallowing
  • Blurred vision, double vision, involuntary eye movements (these disappear after stopping treatment)
  • Breathing pauses

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to diazepam or similar medicines.
  • Do not use if you have muscle weakness (myasthenia gravis), severe liver disease, severe lung disease, or sleep apnea.
  • Tell your doctor if you have a history of alcohol or drug abuse.
  • If you are elderly or frail, this medicine can cause confusion and increase the risk of falls.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have depression or thoughts of self-harm.

  • Contact your doctor if you feel restless, aggressive, or have nightmares – you may need to stop the medicine.
  • Do not stop taking this medicine suddenly, as it can cause withdrawal symptoms.
  • Using this medicine with strong pain relievers (opioids) can be life-threatening.
  • Avoid alcohol and grapefruit juice during treatment.
  • Do not use if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning to become pregnant.
  • This medicine can make you drowsy; do not drive or operate machinery if you feel tired.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category D

Avoid use in older adults. Sedative. A long-acting. Increases the risk of drug addiction, cognitive disorder and traffic accidents. Increases risk of falls. Paradoxically, may increase anxiety, restlessness and aggression. Avoid grapefruit. (updated 15.1.2024)
