How to Use

Dosage

The usual dose for adults is 25 to 100 mg once a day. For severe conditions, your doctor might adjust it. Children's dosage is decided by a doctor.

Method

Take with food and a glass of water, either as one dose or split into two doses daily. Take at the same time each day.

Important

For most conditions, the maximum daily dose is usually 100 mg, but for severe swelling or before surgery, it can be up to 400 mg for a short period.

  • Changes in kidney function tests (e.g., creatinine or renin levels)
  • Dehydration
  • Lack of interest or motivation (apathy)
  • Changes in sex drive
  • Dizziness
  • Kidney problems
  • Fewer white blood cells or platelets
  • Liver problems
  • Hair loss
  • Increased body hair
  • Non-cancerous breast lumps
  • Severe skin reactions (e.g., toxic epidermal necrolysis, Stevens-Johnson syndrome, DRESS, pemphigoid)

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to spironolactone, have severe kidney disease, have stopped urinating, have high potassium or low sodium in your blood, have Addison's disease (a problem with your adrenal glands), or have porphyria (a rare blood disorder). Children with moderate to severe kidney disease should not take this medicine.
  • Talk to your doctor before taking this medicine if you have liver or kidney problems, diabetes with reduced kidney function, stomach or duodenal ulcers, or if you are pregnant.
  • Taking this medicine with certain other medicines, potassium supplements, or foods high in potassium can lead to very high potassium levels in your blood. This can cause muscle cramps, irregular heartbeat, diarrhea, nausea, dizziness, and headache.
  • Always tell your doctor if you are planning to have surgery while taking this medicine.
  • Do not use this medicine with mitotane (a medicine used for certain adrenal gland tumors).

  • This medicine can make you feel dizzy or tired, especially when you start taking it or when your dose changes. Do not drive or operate machines until you know how you react to it.
  • This medicine contains lactose. If you have an intolerance to some sugars, talk to your doctor before taking it.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Reduce the dose in moderately severe renal impairment. Do not use in severe renal impairment. Consider risk of hyperkalaemia.. (updated 19.5.2025)
