How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will prescribe your dose individually. The usual dose is 25–200 mg once a day or divided into two doses.

Method

Swallow the tablets with liquid. Take them with a meal to improve absorption. You can split the tablet by gently pressing it.

Important

The maximum daily dose is usually 200 mg.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Breast enlargement in men
  • Menstrual cycle disorders (such as irregular or missed periods, bleeding after menopause)
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Drowsiness
  • Fatigue
  • Headache
  • Inability to get an erection (impotence)
RARE
  • High potassium or low sodium in the blood
  • Confusion
  • Muscle cramps
  • Tingling or numbness
  • Rash
  • Red skin
  • Itching
  • Higher creatinine levels in the blood (may indicate kidney problems)
  • Low white blood cell or platelet count
  • Sudden kidney failure
  • Dizziness
  • Benign breast lumps
  • Breast pain
  • Liver problems
  • Hair loss
  • Excessive body hair
  • Pemphigoid (a skin condition with fluid-filled blisters)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to spironolactone or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use this medicine if you have severe kidney failure (your kidneys are not working properly) or if you cannot urinate.
  • Do not use this medicine if you have too much potassium in your blood.
  • Do not use this medicine if you have Addison's disease (adrenal insufficiency).
  • Talk to your doctor if you are taking other medicines that increase potassium levels, such as other diuretics, potassium supplements, or certain blood pressure medicines. Too much potassium can cause symptoms like muscle cramps, irregular heartbeat, diarrhea, nausea, dizziness, or headache.

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Reduce the dose in moderately severe renal impairment. Do not use in severe renal impairment. Consider risk of hyperkalaemia.. (updated 19.5.2025)
