How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will prescribe the correct dose, usually 25–200 mg once a day or divided into two doses.

Method

Take the tablets with fluid during a meal, as this helps your body absorb the medicine better. You can divide the tablet by pressing lightly.

Important

Usually no more than 200 mg per day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Breast enlargement in men (gynecomastia)
  • Menstrual disorders (irregular, missed periods, post-menopausal bleeding)
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhea
  • Drowsiness
  • Fatigue
  • Headache
  • Impotence
RARE
  • High potassium in blood (hyperkalemia) or low sodium in blood (hyponatremia)
  • Confusion
  • Muscle cramps
  • Numbness or tingling sensation (paresthesia)
  • Skin rash, redness, or itching
  • Increased creatinine levels in blood (a sign of kidney function)
  • Low white blood cells or platelets
  • Sudden kidney failure
  • Dizziness
  • Benign breast lumps or breast pain
  • Liver problems
  • Hair loss or excessive hair growth (virilization in women)
  • Skin blistering condition (pemphigoid)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to spironolactone or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have sudden kidney failure, no urine output, too much potassium in your blood, or adrenal gland problems (Addison's disease).
  • Be careful if you take other potassium-sparing diuretics, potassium supplements, potassium-containing food supplements (like Pansalt), or certain blood pressure medicines (ACE inhibitors or AT2 receptor blockers), as your blood potassium level could become too high.
  • Symptoms of high potassium can include muscle cramps, irregular heartbeat, diarrhea, nausea, dizziness, or headache. Tell your doctor immediately if you experience these symptoms.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Reduce the dose in moderately severe renal impairment. Do not use in severe renal impairment. Consider risk of hyperkalaemia.. (updated 19.5.2025)
