How to Use

Dosage

The usual dose is 100 mg of hydrocortisone. For shock, doses of 250 mg to 1000 mg may be given slowly into a vein.

Method

A doctor or nurse will give Solu-Cortef as an injection into a vein or muscle, or as a slow drip into a vein.

Important

High-dose steroid treatment should generally not be continued for more than 48 to 72 hours.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to hydrocortisone or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have a fungal infection that affects your whole body.
  • This medicine should not be injected into your spinal cord or epidural space, unless for certain chemotherapy treatments.
  • Solu-Cortef can make you more likely to get infections, hide infection symptoms, or worsen existing or hidden infections. Tell your doctor if you suspect an infection.
  • This medicine may cause eye problems, including blurred vision or other vision changes. Contact your doctor if this happens.

  • If you have cancer and are being treated with this medicine, tell your doctor if you experience muscle cramps, weakness, confusion, irregular heartbeat, vision loss, or shortness of breath, as these could be signs of tumor lysis syndrome.
  • Long-term high doses of this medicine can cause abnormal fat to build up around your spinal cord.
  • If you take blood thinners by mouth, using Solu-Cortef may increase your risk of bleeding. Your doctor will monitor you closely.
  • If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, planning to get pregnant, or think you might be pregnant, ask your doctor for advice before using this medicine.
  • If you feel dizzy, lightheaded, or have seizures, do not drive or use machines.
  • This medicine must be stopped slowly to avoid withdrawal symptoms like loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, tiredness, headache, fever, muscle and joint pain, skin peeling, weight loss, and low blood pressure.
