How to Use

Dosage

The usual dose is 100 mg of hydrocortisone. For severe shock, doses of 250 mg to 1000 mg may be given slowly into a vein.

Method

This medicine is given as an injection or infusion into a vein, or as an injection into a muscle, by a doctor or nurse.

Important

High-dose corticosteroid treatment should generally not continue for more than 48–72 hours.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Increased appetite and weight gain.
  • Fluid retention causing swelling.
  • Higher blood sugar levels.
  • Mood changes like depression or feeling anxious.
  • Stomach upset, including pain or ulcers.
  • Muscle weakness or pain.
  • Skin thinning or stretch marks.
  • Increased risk of infections.
RARE
  • Severe allergic reactions (e.g., trouble breathing).
  • Mental health problems, such as seeing or hearing things that aren't real, or severe confusion.
  • Seizures (convulsions).
  • Serious eye problems like glaucoma (increased eye pressure) or cataracts (cloudy vision).
  • A hole in the stomach or intestine.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use Solu-Cortef if you are allergic to hydrocortisone or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use Solu-Cortef if you have a widespread fungal infection in your body.
  • This medicine must not be injected into the spinal cord or epidural space, unless it's part of a specific cancer treatment plan.
