How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will tell you how much to take, usually between 4 and 48 mg each day. More might be needed for serious problems.

Method

Take the tablet exactly as your doctor instructed. You can break the tablet in half if needed. For long-term use, you might take it every other morning.

Important

Do not take more than 48 mg in a day unless your doctor tells you to.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Infections
  • Body's own steroid production slowing down (with long-term use)
  • Rounded face and weight gain
  • Swelling from too much salt and water in the body
  • Feeling sad or overly happy (euphoria)
  • Cataracts (cloudy eyes)
  • High blood pressure
  • Stomach or gut ulcers (can bleed or break open)
  • Swelling in arms and legs
  • Bruises, thin skin, fragile skin, acne
  • Bone loss
  • Muscle weakness
  • Slow wound healing
  • Low potassium in the blood
RARE
  • Severe body chemical changes (tumor lysis syndrome) when starting cancer treatment
  • Rare blood vessel tumor (Kaposi's sarcoma)
  • Serious allergic reactions to the medicine
  • Withdrawal symptoms if you stop steroids suddenly (like loss of appetite, throwing up, headache, fever, joint pain, muscle pain, weight loss, low blood pressure)
  • Mental health problems like confusion, severe sadness, thinking things that are not real (psychosis), or changes in personality
  • Increased pressure in the head, seizures, memory loss, dizziness, or headache
  • Heart problems like heart failure, irregular heartbeat, or heart muscle damage after a heart attack
  • Stomach and gut problems like stomach ulcer, pancreas swelling (pancreatitis), gut lining swelling, stomach pain, bloating, diarrhea, nausea, hiccups
  • Skin issues like sudden skin swelling (angioedema), small bruises, stretch marks, skin color changes, too much hair growth, rash, itching, hives, or too much sweating
  • Bone weakness due to poor blood flow, broken bones, muscle wasting, joint disease, joint pain, muscle pain, torn tendons, or spine fractures
  • Irregular periods
  • Scleroderma renal crisis (a serious kidney problem) for people with scleroderma, causing high blood pressure and less urine.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use Solomet if you have a body-wide fungal infection or are allergic to methylprednisolone or other similar medicines (corticosteroids).
  • If you get a severe allergic reaction (like trouble breathing, very low blood pressure), stop taking Solomet and get medical help right away.
  • Never change your dose or stop taking Solomet on your own. Stopping suddenly can cause serious health problems. Always talk to your doctor first.
  • Do not drink grapefruit juice while taking this medicine. It can make the side effects worse.
  • This medicine can make you more likely to get infections. Tell your doctor right away if you notice any signs of infection (like fever or sore throat) during treatment.

  • If you feel muscle weakness, pain, cramps, or numbness, contact your doctor immediately.
  • If you notice changes in your mood, trouble sleeping, or other mental health symptoms, talk to your doctor.
  • If you have eye problems like blurry vision or eye pain, contact your doctor.
  • If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning a pregnancy, ask your doctor for advice before using this medicine.
  • This medicine might make you feel dizzy or affect your vision. Do not drive or use machines if you feel this way.
  • For children, the doctor should use the lowest effective dose for the shortest time possible, as it can affect growth.
