How to Use

Dosage

Your anesthesiologist will decide the right dose for you based on your age, weight, and the type of surgery.

Method

Sojourn is given as a vapor for you to breathe in through a mask. You might also get another medicine by injection to help you fall asleep first.

This medicine is always given by an anesthesiologist, who will make sure you receive the correct amount.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Feeling restless or anxious
  • Slow heartbeat
  • Low blood pressure
  • Cough
  • Feeling sick (nausea)
  • Being sick (vomiting)
  • Sudden confusion or unclear thinking
  • Feeling sleepy or very drowsy
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Fast heartbeat
  • High blood pressure
  • Problems breathing
  • Tightening of the airways
  • Slow and shallow breathing
  • Throat spasms (larynx spasms)
  • More saliva than usual
  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Changes in white blood cells (which can affect your immune system)
  • High blood sugar (seen in blood tests)
  • High liver enzymes (seen in blood tests)
  • High fluoride levels in blood (seen in blood tests)
  • Low body temperature
RARE
  • Changes in white blood cells (can cause dizziness, tiredness, weakness, mouth sores, and increase infection risk)
  • Confusion
  • Heart palpitations or irregular heartbeat
  • AV-block (problems with the heart's electrical system)
  • Apnea (breathing stops)
  • Asthma
  • Low oxygen levels in the blood (hypoxia)
  • High creatinine in blood (shows kidney problems in blood tests)
  • Seizures like epilepsy
  • Sudden twitching movements
  • Cardiac arrest
  • Liver failure or inflammation (hepatitis) with symptoms like loss of appetite, fever, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, jaundice, and dark urine
  • Chest discomfort
  • Increased pressure inside the skull
  • Inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis)
  • High potassium levels in blood (seen in blood tests)
  • Muscle stiffness
  • Yellow skin (jaundice)
  • Kidney inflammation with symptoms like fever, confusion, sleepiness, rash, swelling, and changes in urine amount or blood in urine
  • Swelling

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to sevoflurane or other similar anesthetics.
  • Do not take if you have ever had liver problems (like hepatitis) after taking sevoflurane or similar medicines.
  • Do not take if you have or might have malignant hyperthermia (a sudden, dangerous rise in body temperature during or after surgery).
  • Do not drink alcohol before or after taking this medicine, until your doctor says it's safe.
  • Do not drive or use machines until your doctor says it is safe, as this medicine can affect your ability for some time.
