How to Use

Dosage

Your specialist will determine the exact dose for your condition, which can range from 200 MBq for an overactive thyroid to 11100 MBq for advanced thyroid cancer.

Method

Take one capsule on an empty stomach with plenty of water. For small children, it can be given with puréed food. Drink plenty of fluids after taking the capsule and the day after the treatment to help flush the medicine out of your body.

Important

The specialist will determine your exact single dose; do not take more than prescribed.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Underactive thyroid
  • Eye inflammation (especially related to Graves' disease)
  • Temporary overactive thyroid
  • Salivary gland inflammation (can cause dry mouth, nose, eyes; tooth problems)
  • Bone marrow problems (leading to weakness, bruising, infections, low red/white blood cells)
  • Changes in smell or taste
  • Nausea
  • Loss of appetite
  • Ovarian problems (irregular periods)
  • Flu-like symptoms
  • Headache, neck pain
  • Extreme tiredness or drowsiness
  • Red, watery, itchy eyes
  • Low white blood cells or platelets
  • Runny nose
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Vomiting
  • Localized swelling
RARE
  • Vocal cord paralysis, hoarseness, difficulty speaking
  • Severe allergic reaction with breathing difficulty or dizziness
  • Severe overactive thyroid (thyroid storm)
  • Thyroid inflammation
  • Dry eyes due to reduced tear gland function
  • Low parathyroid hormone (tingling, muscle cramps)
  • Thyroid hormone deficiency in children (offspring)
  • Liver problems
  • Acne-like rash
  • Abnormal cancerous increase in white blood cells
  • Solid cancers (e.g., bladder, colon, stomach, breast)
  • Permanent or severe reduction in bone marrow blood cell production
  • Increased parathyroid hormone production
  • Inflammation/narrowing of windpipe or throat
  • Lung scarring (fibrosis)
  • Breathing difficulties or wheezing
  • Lung inflammation
  • Mouth and throat pain
  • Fluid buildup in the brain

  • Reduced male fertility (low or lost sperm production)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to sodium iodide or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you are pregnant or think you might be pregnant. Women must not get pregnant for 6 months after treatment.
  • Do not breastfeed for 8 weeks before treatment and do not resume breastfeeding after treatment.
  • Avoid close contact with small children and pregnant women for several days after treatment, as your body fluids will be radioactive.
  • Tell your doctor if you have kidney problems, difficulty swallowing, esophageal blockage, acute gastritis, stomach ulcer, or reduced stomach/intestinal function.
