How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide your dose based on your body weight and how well your body uses the fats in the medicine.

Method

SMOFlipid is given directly into your blood through a drip or an infusion pump.

Important

Your doctor will calculate the maximum amount you can receive each day to prevent too much fat in your blood.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Slight increase in body temperature.
RARE
  • Chills.
  • Loss of appetite.
  • Nausea.
  • Vomiting.
  • Allergic reactions (like fever, swelling, low blood pressure, skin rash, redness, headache).
  • Feeling hot or cold.
  • Pale skin.
  • Bluish discoloration of skin and mucous membranes (due to low oxygen in blood).
  • Pain in the neck, back, bones, chest, or lower back.
  • High or low blood pressure.
  • Shortness of breath.
  • Long-lasting and painful erection.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use SMOFlipid if you are allergic to soy oil, fish oil, olive oil, other fats, or any ingredient in this medicine, including egg or peanut products.
  • Do not use if you have very high levels of fat in your blood (severe hyperlipidemia).
  • Do not use if you have serious kidney or liver problems.
  • Do not use if you have serious blood clotting disorders.
  • Do not use if you are in acute shock.

  • Do not use if you have too much fluid in your body, such as fluid in the lungs (pulmonary edema) or heart failure.
  • Do not use if you have an unstable medical condition, such as after a severe injury, heart attack, stroke, blood clot, severe acid buildup in the blood (metabolic acidosis), uncontrolled diabetes, blood poisoning, or dehydration.
