How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide your dose based on your weight, usually 13–31 ml per kilogram of body weight per day.

Method

A nurse will give SmofKabiven to you as a drip directly into your bloodstream.

Important

You should not receive more than 35 ml of SmofKabiven per kilogram of body weight per day.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Slight increase in body temperature
RARE
  • Rise in liver test values in the blood.
  • Loss of appetite, nausea, or vomiting.
  • Chills, dizziness, headache, feeling cold or hot, pain in the neck, back, bones, chest, or lower back.
  • Low or high blood pressure, shortness of breath, heart palpitations.
  • Swelling, fever, rash, hives, skin redness, paleness, bluish lips or skin (due to lack of oxygen).

Important Warnings

  • Do not use SmofKabiven if you are allergic to any of its ingredients, such as fish, egg, or soy oil.
  • Do not use if you have very high fat levels in your blood, severe liver problems, serious bleeding issues, or if your body cannot properly process proteins.
  • Do not use if you have severe kidney disease without dialysis, uncontrolled high blood sugar, too much salt in your blood, or too much fluid in your lungs or overall body.
  • Do not use if you have untreated heart failure, acute shock, or any other very unstable condition, such as severe injury, heart attack, or stroke.
  • SmofKabiven must not be given to children younger than 2 years old.

  • If you get fever, rash, swelling, trouble breathing, chills, sweating, nausea, or vomiting during the drip, tell your nurse right away. These could be signs of an allergy or too much medicine.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have kidney or liver problems, diabetes, pancreatitis, thyroid issues, or blood poisoning.
