How to Use

Dosage

Take one tablet.

Method

Twice a day, by mouth, with meals to help prevent stomach upset.

Important

Your doctor will tell you the maximum daily dose.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Low blood sugar.
  • Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, flatulence (gas), constipation, loss of appetite.
  • Headache.
  • Upper respiratory tract infection, stuffy or runny nose, sore throat.
  • Osteoarthritis, arm and leg pain.
  • Metallic taste in mouth, reduced vitamin B12 levels (may cause extreme tiredness, sore tongue, tingling, pale or yellow skin).
  • Swollen hands and feet.
RARE
  • Drowsiness, dizziness.
  • Itching, hives, skin redness (rash), skin blisters (bullous pemphigoid).
  • Dry mouth.
  • Decreased platelet count (can lead to easy bruising or bleeding).
  • Kidney problems (sometimes needing dialysis), joint pain, muscle pain, back pain, interstitial lung disease (a serious lung condition), hepatitis (liver inflammation).

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to sitagliptin, metformin, or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you have severe kidney or liver problems.
  • Do not take if you have uncontrolled diabetes with very high blood sugar, severe nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, rapid weight loss, or if you have lactic acidosis or ketoacidosis (serious conditions with too much acid in your blood).
  • Do not take if you have a severe infection or are very dehydrated (lack of fluids).
  • Tell your doctor if you are having a medical imaging scan with contrast dye, as you may need to stop this medicine temporarily.

  • Do not take if you recently had a heart attack or have severe circulation problems (like shock or trouble breathing).
  • Avoid drinking too much alcohol while taking this medicine, as it can increase the risk of a serious side effect called lactic acidosis.
  • Do not take if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Stop taking this medicine and call your doctor right away if you get severe stomach pain (could be pancreatitis) or new skin blisters (could be bullous pemphigoid).
  • Stop taking this medicine and go to the nearest hospital right away if you get symptoms of lactic acidosis, such as vomiting, stomach pain, muscle cramps, feeling very tired, trouble breathing, low body temperature, or slow heartbeat.
  • Do not take if you have type 1 diabetes. This medicine is not for children under 18 years old.
  • If you take this medicine with insulin or certain other diabetes medicines (sulfonylureas), your blood sugar may drop too low. Your doctor may need to adjust your dose.
