How to Use

Dosage

The recommended dose is one tablet twice a day.

Method

Take by mouth with meals to reduce the risk of stomach upset.

Important

Your doctor may increase your dose to control your blood sugar. Do not take more than prescribed by your doctor.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to sitagliptin, metformin, or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you have severe kidney problems.
  • Do not take if your diabetes is poorly controlled with very high blood sugar, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, rapid weight loss, or if you have lactic acidosis or ketoacidosis.
  • Do not take if you have a severe infection or are dehydrated.
  • Stop taking this medicine before and for a few days after X-ray procedures that use dye injected into a vein, as advised by your doctor.

  • Do not take if you recently had a heart attack or have severe blood circulation problems like shock or breathing difficulties.
  • Do not take if you have liver disease.
  • Avoid heavy alcohol use while taking this medicine, as it increases the risk of lactic acidosis.
  • Do not take if you are breastfeeding.
  • Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas) has been reported in patients taking this medicine. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience severe stomach pain.
  • If you get blisters on your skin, tell your doctor, as it might be a sign of a serious skin condition.
  • Stop taking this medicine and get medical help right away if you notice any signs of lactic acidosis, which is a very serious but rare side effect that can lead to coma. Symptoms include vomiting, stomach pain, muscle cramps, feeling unwell, extreme tiredness, or trouble breathing.
  • If you are taking a sulfonylurea or insulin with this medicine, your blood sugar may drop too low. Your doctor may need to adjust your dose of those medicines.
  • If you are going to have major surgery, you will need to stop taking this medicine for a while before and after the procedure.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Reduce the dose already in mild renal impairment. Do not use in severe renal impairment or tissue hypoxia. May reduce the absorption of vitamin B12. Consider risk of lactic acidosis. The drug should be paused during fever, gastroenteritis or dehydration, and before surgery or imaging with a contrast agent. (updated 20.5.2024)
