How to Use

Dosage

One tablet twice a day.

Method

Take the tablet by mouth with meals to reduce stomach upset.

Important

Usually two tablets per day, as directed by your doctor.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Low blood sugar (when taken with sulfonylurea or insulin)
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhea
  • Stomach pain
  • Gas (flatulence)
  • Loss of appetite
  • Headache
  • Upper respiratory infection
  • Stuffy or runny nose and sore throat
  • Osteoarthritis (joint wear)
  • Pain in arms or legs
  • Constipation
  • Swelling of hands or feet (when taken with pioglitazone)
  • Metallic taste in mouth
  • Reduced Vitamin B12 levels in blood (may cause severe tiredness, sore tongue, tingling, pale or yellow skin)
RARE
  • Dizziness
  • Drowsiness
  • Itching
  • Dry mouth
  • Reduced platelet count
  • Kidney problems (sometimes requiring dialysis)
  • Joint pain
  • Muscle pain
  • Back pain
  • Lung disease (interstitial lung disease)
  • Blisters on skin (bullous pemphigoid)
  • Liver inflammation (hepatitis)
  • Hives or skin redness (rash)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to sitagliptin, metformin, or any other ingredients in this medicine.
  • Tell your doctor if you have severe kidney or liver problems.
  • Stop taking this medicine and contact your doctor immediately if you experience severe and persistent stomach pain that may spread to your back, along with nausea and vomiting. These can be signs of pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas).
  • This medicine can rarely cause a very serious condition called lactic acidosis, especially if your kidneys are not working properly. If you experience symptoms like vomiting, stomach pain, muscle cramps, severe tiredness, or difficulty breathing, stop taking the medicine and go to the hospital immediately.
  • If you take this medicine with other diabetes medications like insulin or a sulfonylurea, your blood sugar might drop too low.

  • Stop taking the medicine temporarily and contact your doctor if you become dehydrated due to severe vomiting, diarrhea, fever, or drinking less than usual.
  • Tell your doctor if you are having an X-ray with contrast dye or a major surgery, as you may need to stop taking this medicine temporarily.
