How to Use

Dosage

One 100 mg tablet.

Method

Take by mouth once daily, with or without food.

Important

The usual maximum daily dose is 100 mg, unless your doctor prescribes a lower dose due to kidney problems.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Low blood sugar
  • Nausea
  • Flatulence (gas)
  • Vomiting (when combined with metformin)
  • Stomach discomfort (when starting combination therapy)
  • Constipation
  • Swelling of hands or feet
  • Common cold or flu-like symptoms
  • Headache
  • Upper respiratory tract infection
  • Stuffy or runny nose, sore throat
  • Osteoarthritis (joint pain)
  • Pain in arms or legs
RARE
  • Stomach pain
  • Diarrhea
  • Drowsiness
  • Dry mouth
  • Dizziness
  • Itching
  • Decreased platelet count (can cause easy bruising or bleeding)
  • Kidney problems (sometimes requiring dialysis)
  • Joint pain (not osteoarthritis)
  • Muscle pain
  • Back pain
  • Interstitial lung disease (a lung condition)
  • Bullous pemphigoid (skin blisters)

Important Warnings

  • Stop taking this medicine and call your doctor right away if you have severe stomach pain, with or without vomiting, as it could be a sign of pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas).
  • Tell your doctor if you have had pancreas problems, gallstones, a lot of alcohol, or high levels of fats in your blood, as these can increase your risk of pancreatitis.
  • Talk to your doctor if you have type 1 diabetes, diabetic ketoacidosis (high blood sugar with rapid weight loss), kidney problems, or have had an allergic reaction to sitagliptin.
  • If you get blisters on your skin, tell your doctor, as this could be a serious skin condition called bullous pemphigoid. Your doctor might ask you to stop taking this medicine.
  • This medicine can cause low blood sugar if taken with certain other diabetes medicines like sulfonylureas or insulin; your doctor may need to adjust your dose.

  • Children and teenagers under 18 years old should not use this medicine.

Category C
