How to Use

Dosage

Take one tablet, or sometimes two, twice daily, exactly as your doctor tells you.

Method

Swallow the tablet with water, with or without food. Try to take it at the same time each day. If you can't swallow it whole, you can crush it and mix it with water, apple juice, or applesauce just before taking it.

Important

Do not take more than your doctor has prescribed. Your doctor will tell you your maximum daily dose.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Bleeding (such as from the eyes, stomach, intestines, rectum, urine, nose, or gums; also bruising and swelling).
  • Anemia, which can make you feel tired or look pale.
  • Feeling sick (nausea).
  • Abnormal blood test results for liver function (like increased GGT).
RARE
  • Bleeding (such as in the brain or spinal cord, from the mouth when coughing, from the vagina, bright red stool, after surgery, from hemorrhoids, in muscles, behind the abdomen, or in the lungs/throat).
  • Low blood pressure, which might make you feel faint or your heart beat faster.
  • A lower number of platelets in your blood (platelets help blood clot).
  • Other abnormal blood tests showing liver problems (such as increased liver enzymes or bilirubin, which can make your skin or eyes look yellow).
  • Skin rash, itching, and hair loss.
  • Severe allergic reactions (symptoms like swelling of the face, lips, mouth, tongue, and/or throat, or trouble breathing). If these occur, seek medical help immediately.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to apixaban or any other ingredients in the tablet.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have severe bleeding or a medical condition that greatly increases your risk of serious bleeding, like an active stomach ulcer or a recent brain bleed.
  • Tell your doctor if you are taking other medicines that thin your blood, unless your doctor has specifically told you to switch treatments or use them together for a short time.
  • Talk to your doctor before taking this medicine if you have severe kidney problems, liver problems, or are on dialysis.
  • Do not take this medicine if you are pregnant. Contact your doctor immediately if you become pregnant while taking this medicine.

  • Discuss with your doctor if you are over 75 years old, weigh less than 60 kg, have uncontrolled very high blood pressure, or have an artificial heart valve, as these may increase bleeding risk.
  • If you need surgery or a medical procedure, your doctor might ask you to temporarily stop taking this medicine. Always tell your doctor or nurse about all medicines you are taking.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Consider renal impairment, age and body weight when determining the dosage. Consider potential interactions especially with other drugs that increase the risk of bleeding. (updated 19.9.2025)
