Method

It is given as an injection into a vein (intravenously) or a muscle (intramuscularly) by a doctor or nurse in a hospital.

Possible Side Effects

COMMON
  • Strange dreams or nightmares
  • Muscle spasms or twitching
  • Blurred vision
  • Increased blood pressure and fast heart rate
  • Feeling sick to your stomach (nausea) or throwing up (vomiting)
  • Too much saliva or mucus
  • Dizziness
  • Feeling restless
  • Increased blood pressure in the lung blood vessels
  • Increased oxygen use, uncontrolled tightening of throat muscles, or temporary breathing problems
RARE
  • Increased pressure in the eye
  • Double vision
  • Temporary fast heartbeat when resting
  • Skin rash or redness (exanthema, erythema)
  • Pain or rash at the injection site
  • Severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) like trouble breathing, swelling, or rash
  • Slow heartbeat and low blood pressure
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Seeing or hearing things that aren't real (hallucinations)
  • Feeling very sad or gloomy
  • Feeling anxious
  • Feeling confused or losing track of time and place
  • Vivid dreams, nightmares, confusion, or unusual behavior (especially when waking up from anesthesia)

Important Warnings

  • Do not use Sinmelan if you are allergic to esketamine or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have a medical condition where an increase in blood pressure could be dangerous for you.
  • Do not use if you had eclampsia or pre-eclampsia (a severe blood pressure condition) during pregnancy.
  • If you have certain heart problems (like ischemic heart disease), this medicine should not be used as your only anesthetic.
  • Do not use if you are taking medicines for breathing problems (like aminophylline or theophylline) or ergometrine (for bleeding).

  • Tell your doctor if you have had any heart problems in the last 6 months, or if you have high blood pressure or an irregular heartbeat.
  • Tell your doctor if you have high pressure in your brain, a brain injury, glaucoma (high eye pressure), or have had eye surgery.
  • Tell your doctor if you have a history of mental health problems (like schizophrenia) or drug/alcohol abuse.
  • Tell your doctor if you have an overactive thyroid, a lung infection, or liver problems.
  • You must not eat or drink 4-6 hours before getting Sinmelan. Do not drink alcohol, drive, or use machines for 24 hours after treatment.
  • Talk to your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. This medicine can affect a baby's breathing if given during delivery.
