How to Use

Dosage

Adults typically start with 10 mg, 20 mg, or sometimes 40 mg daily. Children (10-17 years) usually start with 10 mg daily.

Method

Take one tablet once a day in the evening, with or without food.

Important

Adults should never take more than 80 mg per day. The maximum for children (10-17 years) is 40 mg per day.

Possible Side Effects

RARE
  • Muscle pain, tenderness, weakness, rupture, or cramps, which can lead to muscle breakdown and kidney damage, and very rarely, even death.
  • Severe allergic reactions, such as swelling of the face, tongue, and throat (breathing difficulties), severe muscle pain, rashes, joint pain, blood vessel inflammation, unusual bruising, hives, sensitivity to light, fever, shortness of breath, general malaise, or lupus-like symptoms.
  • Liver inflammation, with symptoms like yellowing of the skin and eyes, itching, dark urine, pale stools, tiredness, weakness, loss of appetite; very rarely liver failure.
  • Pancreatitis, often with severe stomach pain.
  • Rash or sores in the mouth.
  • Severe allergic reaction causing breathing difficulties or dizziness (anaphylaxis).
  • Gynecomastia (enlargement of breasts in men).
  • Low red blood cell count (anemia).
  • Numbness or weakness in arms and legs.
  • Headache, tingling sensation, dizziness.
  • Digestive symptoms (stomach pain, constipation, flatulence, indigestion, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting).
  • Rash, itching, and hair loss.
  • Blurred vision and impaired vision.
  • Weakness.
  • Insomnia.
  • Memory impairment, memory loss, confusion.
COMMON
  • Erectile dysfunction.
  • Depression.
  • Lung inflammation causing breathing problems, including persistent cough and/or shortness of breath or fever.
  • Tendon problems, sometimes including tendon rupture.
  • Sleep disorders, including nightmares.
  • Sexual dysfunction.
  • Diabetes. This is more likely if you have high blood sugar, high blood fat, are overweight, or have high blood pressure.
  • Persistent muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness that does not go away after stopping Simvastatin Viatris.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to simvastatin or any other ingredients.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have liver disease, are pregnant, or are breastfeeding.
  • Do not take this medicine if you are using certain medications for fungal infections (e.g., itraconazole), infections (e.g., erythromycin), HIV, Hepatitis C, depression (nefazodone), to lower cholesterol (gemfibrozil), or after organ transplants (ciclosporin).
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you experience unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness. These symptoms can sometimes be serious and lead to kidney damage or, very rarely, death.
  • Talk to your doctor if you drink a lot of alcohol or have kidney or thyroid disease.

  • Tell your doctor if you have muscle weakness (myasthenia gravis) or eye muscle weakness (ocular myasthenia), as this medicine might worsen them.
  • Inform your doctor if you are going to have surgery, as you might need to stop taking the medicine for a while.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Reduce the dose in severe renal impairment. Possible adverse effects include muscle pain and muscular weakness. Consider potential interactions. Avoid grapefruit. (updated 17.4.2023)
