How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will usually prescribe a starting dose of 10 mg, 20 mg, or 40 mg once a day.

Method

Take the tablets once a day in the evening, with or without food.

Important

Do not take more than 80 mg per day.

Possible Side Effects

RARE
  • Muscle pain, tenderness, weakness, or cramps, muscle rupture (can be severe and lead to kidney damage or death).
  • Liver inflammation with symptoms like yellow skin or eyes, itching, dark urine, pale stools, tiredness, weakness, or loss of appetite.
  • Pancreatitis, often with severe stomach pain.
  • Swelling of the face, tongue, or throat (angioedema) causing breathing difficulties; severe allergic reaction causing breathing difficulties or dizziness (anaphylaxis); rashes, hives, sensitivity to sunlight, fever, redness.
  • Low red blood cell count (anemia).
  • Numbness or weakness in arms and legs, headache, dizziness, tingling sensation.
  • Blurred vision, decreased vision.
  • Abdominal pain, constipation, flatulence, indigestion, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting.
  • Rash, itching, hair loss.
  • Weakness.
  • Sleep difficulties.
  • Poor memory, memory loss, confusion.
  • Gynecomastia (enlargement of male breasts).
  • Erectile dysfunction.
  • Depression.
  • Lung inflammation causing breathing difficulties like cough, shortness of breath, or fever.
  • Tendon problems, sometimes with rupture.
  • Persistent muscle weakness.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to simvastatin or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not use if you have liver disease.
  • Do not use if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
  • Do not use if you are taking certain medicines for fungal infections, other infections, HIV, or hepatitis C, certain antidepressants, or cholesterol-lowering medicines like gemfibrozil, cyclosporine, or danazol.
  • Contact a doctor immediately if you experience unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C
