How to Use

Dosage

The usual starting dose for adults is generally 10 mg, 20 mg, or sometimes 40 mg once daily. For children (10-17 years), the usual starting dose is 10 mg once daily in the evening.

Method

Take the tablets once daily in the evening, with or without food.

Important

The maximum daily dose for adults is 80 mg. For children, the maximum daily dose is 40 mg.

Possible Side Effects

RARE
  • Muscle pain, tenderness, weakness, cramps, or tear. In some cases, this can lead to muscle breakdown and kidney damage, and very rarely, even death.
  • Allergic reactions, such as swelling of the face, tongue, or throat which can cause breathing difficulties (angioedema); severe allergic reaction causing breathing difficulties or dizziness (anafylaxis).
  • Liver inflammation with symptoms such as yellowing of skin and eyes, itching, dark urine, pale stools, tiredness, weakness, or loss of appetite.
  • Pancreatitis (inflammation of the pancreas), often accompanied by severe stomach pain.
  • Low red blood cell count (anemia).
  • Numbness or weakness in hands and feet.
  • Headache, dizziness, tingling sensation.
  • Blurred vision, decreased vision.
  • Digestive issues (abdominal pain, constipation, flatulence, indigestion, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting).
  • Rash, itching, hair loss.
  • Weakness.
  • Insomnia, memory impairment, memory loss, confusion.
  • Erectile dysfunction.
  • Depression.
  • Lung inflammation (symptoms include persistent cough, shortness of breath, or fever).
  • Tendon problems, sometimes with rupture.
  • Persistent muscle weakness.
  • General muscle weakness (Myasthenia gravis) or eye muscle weakness (ocular myasthenia).
  • Breast enlargement in men (gynecomastia).
  • Sleep disturbances, including nightmares.
  • Sexual dysfunction.
  • Diabetes (more likely if you have high blood sugar, are overweight, or have high blood pressure).

Important Warnings

  • Do not use if you are allergic to simvastatin or any of its other ingredients.
  • Do not use if you have liver disease, are pregnant, or breastfeeding.
  • Tell your doctor about all other medicines you are taking, as some medicines do not mix well with Simvastatin SanoSwiss.
  • Avoid grapefruit juice, as it can affect how the medicine works.
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you experience unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness.

  • Tell your doctor if you have had liver problems, consume a lot of alcohol, or have myasthenia (a disease causing muscle weakness).
  • If you are taking or have recently taken a medicine containing fusidic acid, you should temporarily stop using Simvastatin SanoSwiss.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Reduce the dose in severe renal impairment. Possible adverse effects include muscle pain and muscular weakness. Consider potential interactions. Avoid grapefruit. (updated 17.4.2023)
