How to Use

Dosage

The usual dose is 5 mg, 10 mg, 20 mg, 40 mg, or 80 mg of simvastatin by mouth once daily.

Method

Take the tablet in the evening, with or without food. Continue as long as your doctor tells you.

Important

For adults, the maximum daily dose is 80 mg. For children and adolescents (10-17 years), the maximum daily dose is 40 mg.

Possible Side Effects

RARE
  • Muscle pain, tenderness, weakness, muscle cramps, or muscle breakdown (rhabdomyolysis).
  • Swelling of face, tongue, and throat, which can cause breathing difficulties (angioedema).
  • Severe muscle pain, usually in the shoulders and hips (polymyalgia rheumatica).
  • Rash with weakness in arms, legs, and neck muscles.
  • Rash or sores in the mouth (lichenoid drug eruption).
  • Joint pain or inflammation.
  • Blood vessel inflammation (vasculitis).
  • Unusual bruising, skin reactions and swelling (dermatomyositis), hives, skin sensitivity to sunlight, fever, redness.
  • Shortness of breath (dyspnea) and general feeling of illness.
  • Lupus-like syndrome (e.g., rash, joint symptoms, and effects on blood cells).
  • Liver inflammation with symptoms like yellow skin/eyes, itching, dark urine or pale stools, tiredness or weakness, loss of appetite, liver failure (fatal and non-fatal).
  • Pancreatitis, often with severe stomach pain.
  • Severe allergic reaction causing breathing difficulties or dizziness (anaphylaxis).
  • Gynecomastia (enlargement of breasts in men).
  • Decrease in red blood cells (anemia).
  • Numbness or weakness in arms and legs.
  • Headache, tingling, dizziness.
  • Blurred vision and impaired vision.
  • Digestive problems (stomach pain, constipation, flatulence, mild indigestion, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting).
  • Rash, itching, hair loss.
  • Weakness.
  • Sleep difficulties (insomnia).
  • Memory impairment (memory loss, confusion).
  • Erectile dysfunction.
  • Depression.
  • Tendon problems, sometimes including tendon rupture.
  • Persistent muscle weakness.
  • Myasthenia gravis (general muscle weakness, sometimes affecting breathing muscles).
  • Ocular myasthenia (weakness of eye muscles).
  • Sleep disturbances, such as nightmares.
  • Sexual dysfunction.
  • Breathing difficulties, including persistent cough and/or shortness of breath or fever.
  • Diabetes. More likely if you have high blood sugar, high fat levels, are overweight, and have high blood pressure.

Important Warnings

  • Do not use this medicine if you are allergic to simvastatin or any other ingredient in it.
  • Do not use if you have liver problems.
  • Do not use if you are pregnant, trying to get pregnant, or breastfeeding. If you become pregnant, stop taking the medicine and contact your doctor.
  • Contact your doctor immediately if you experience unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness. This could be a sign of serious muscle damage.
  • Avoid drinking grapefruit juice while taking this medicine, as it can affect how the medicine works.

  • Tell your doctor if you are taking other medicines for fungal infections, bacterial infections, HIV, hepatitis C, depression, or if you are taking cyclosporine, gemfibrozil, danazol, cobicistat, amiodarone, verapamil, diltiazem, amlodipine, lomitapid, daptomycin, colchicine, or ticagrelor.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Reduce the dose in severe renal impairment. Possible adverse effects include muscle pain and muscular weakness. Consider potential interactions. Avoid grapefruit. (updated 17.4.2023)
