How to Use

Dosage

Your doctor will decide your dose, usually 5 mg, 10 mg, 20 mg, 40 mg, or up to 80 mg of simvastatin once daily; for children (10-17 years), the usual starting dose is 10 mg in the evening.

Method

Take your tablet in the evening, with or without food; if you also take a bile acid binding medicine, take Simvastatin ratiopharm at least 2 hours before or 4 hours after that medicine.

Important

The maximum daily dose for adults is 80 mg; for children and adolescents, the maximum daily dose is 40 mg.

Possible Side Effects

RARE
  • Unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, weakness, or cramps; this can be serious and, in rare cases, lead to muscle breakdown, kidney damage, or death.
  • Severe allergic reactions, including swelling of the face, tongue, or throat which can cause difficulty breathing, severe muscle pain, skin rashes, or joint pain.
  • Liver problems, which may include yellow skin or eyes, itching, dark urine, pale stools, tiredness, or loss of appetite.
  • Inflammation of the pancreas, causing severe stomach pain.
  • A severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) that can cause breathing difficulties or dizziness.
  • Gynecomastia (breast enlargement in men).
  • Low red blood cell count (anemia).
  • Numbness, weakness, headache, dizziness, or tingling in the arms and legs.
  • Blurred vision or impaired vision.
  • Stomach pain, constipation, gas, indigestion, diarrhea, nausea, or vomiting.
  • Skin rash, itching, or hair loss.
  • General weakness.
  • Trouble sleeping, nightmares, memory loss, confusion, or depression.
  • Erection problems.
  • Tendon problems, sometimes including rupture.
  • Persistent muscle weakness, potentially including myasthenia gravis or ocular myasthenia.
  • Breathing problems, such as persistent cough, shortness of breath, or fever.
  • Diabetes, more likely if you have high blood sugar, high blood fat, are overweight, and have high blood pressure.

Important Warnings

  • Do not take if you are allergic to simvastatin or any other ingredient in this medicine.
  • Do not take if you have liver disease, are pregnant, or breastfeeding.
  • Avoid certain other medicines; tell your doctor about all medicines you are taking, as some should not be used with Simvastatin ratiopharm.
  • Do not take more than 40 mg of Simvastatin ratiopharm if you are also taking lomitapide.
  • Stop taking this medicine and contact your doctor immediately if you experience unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness, as this could be a sign of a serious muscle problem.

  • If you need to take fusidic acid for a bacterial infection, you must temporarily stop taking this medicine.
  • Avoid drinking grapefruit juice while taking this medicine.

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Reduce the dose in severe renal impairment. Possible adverse effects include muscle pain and muscular weakness. Consider potential interactions. Avoid grapefruit. (updated 17.4.2023)
