How to Use

Dosage

The usual starting dose is 10 mg, 20 mg, or sometimes 40 mg, taken once a day. Your doctor might adjust this.

Method

Take the tablet by mouth in the evening, with or without food. If taking with a bile acid binding medicine, take Simvastatin Orion at least 2 hours before or 4 hours after it.

Important

Do not take more than 80 mg in a single day.

Possible Side Effects

RARE
  • Muscle pain, tenderness, weakness, or cramps.
  • Allergic reactions like swelling of the face or throat, skin rash, joint pain, or lupus-like symptoms.
  • Liver problems with symptoms like yellow skin or eyes, itching, dark urine, or feeling tired.
  • Inflammation of the pancreas, often with severe stomach pain.
  • Low red blood cell count.
  • Numbness or weakness in your arms and legs.
  • Headache, dizziness, or a tingling sensation.
  • Stomach pain, constipation, gas, indigestion, diarrhea, nausea, or vomiting.
  • Skin rash, itching, or hair loss.
  • Feeling weak.
  • Memory loss or confusion.
  • Blurred vision or vision problems.
  • Trouble sleeping.
  • Worsening memory problems.
  • Erectile dysfunction.
  • Depression.
  • Lung inflammation, causing breathing problems, persistent cough, or fever.
  • Tendon problems, sometimes including tendon rupture.
  • Myasthenia gravis (a disease causing general muscle weakness, including eye muscles and sometimes breathing muscles).
  • Sleep disturbances, including nightmares.
  • Sexual problems.
  • Diabetes (more likely if you have high blood sugar, high blood fats, are overweight, or have high blood pressure).
  • Persistent muscle pain or weakness that does not go away after stopping Simvastatin Orion.

Important Warnings

  • Tell your doctor right away if you get unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness. This can be serious.
  • Do not take this medicine if you are allergic to simvastatin or any other ingredients in the tablet.
  • Do not take this medicine if you have liver disease or have had it in the past.
  • Do not use this medicine if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.
  • Avoid drinking grapefruit juice while taking this medicine.

  • If you are taking fusidic acid (for bacterial infections), you must temporarily stop Simvastatin Orion. Your doctor will tell you when it's safe to restart.
  • Do not take this medicine with certain other medications, including medicines for fungal infections, bacterial infections, HIV, Hepatitis C, depression, high cholesterol (like gemfibrozil), or medicines used after organ transplants (like ciclosporin or danazol).

Use in Elderly Patients

Category C

Suitable for older adults, with specific precautions. Reduce the dose in severe renal impairment. Possible adverse effects include muscle pain and muscular weakness. Consider potential interactions. Avoid grapefruit. (updated 17.4.2023)
